Box Score Amherst took advantage of an own-goal, defeating third-ranked Middlebury 1-0 in a game played on Dragone Field. The Panthers (1-1, 0-1) outshot the Jeffs (1-0, 1-0) 18-6 on the afternoon, but could not find the back of the net. Middlebury returns to action on Wednesday when they host Keene State at 4:00, while Amherst hosts Mt. Holyoke on the same day.
Middlebury had a nice chance in the ninth minute, but Jamie Soroka's redirect after a feed from Krystina Reynolds was denied by a nice save from Holly Burwick (9 saves). Soroka had a good look on a turn-and-shoot play seven minutes later, but her shot went just wide.
The 26th minute saw another good opportunity for the Panthers when Hannah Robinson's attempt was denied with a diving save from Burwick, who would go on to earn the shutout.
The chances continued in the second half, as Soroka's shot just missed the crossbar from 20 yards out after a pass from Robinson.
The game's only goal came at the 70:13 mark after a restart near the right corner kick area. The ball was served in by Jessy Hale, as miscommunication in the box led to the ball ricocheting into the back of the net for the game's only goal.
The Panthers had a few chances in the final 20 minutes, but could not score the equalizer. Kate Reinmuth finished with one save for the Panthers.
