Behind a sweep in all three doubles matches, fourth-seeded Middlebury cruised to a 5-0 quarterfinal victory over fifth-seeded Tufts (9-9) during the 2014 NESCAC Championship Tournament at Bowdoin. The Panthers (10-6) advance to take on top-seeded Amherst on Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. Middlebury's victory total marks the 14th-straight year the team has eclipsed the 10-win plateau.
Starting things off in a positive fashion for Middlebury, the tandem of Dorrie Paradies and Katie Paradies grabbed the first point at #3 doubles with an 8-3 victory over Connor Calabro and Chelsea Hayashi. Lily Bondy and Lauren Amos were right behind with an 8-4 win at #2 against Samantha Gann and Alexa Metlzer. At #1, the Middlebury duo of Ria Gerger and Kaysee Orozco completed the sweep for the Panthers via an 8-6 decision over Shelci Bowman and Jaqueline Baum.
In singles play, Margot Marchese surrendered just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win at #4 against Bowman. Orozco closed out the match for Middlebury via a 6-0, 6-3 victory in the second flight over Metlzer.
The Panthers grabbed the opening set in each of the remaining four singles matches that went unfinished.
