Middlebury Falls in NESCAC Semifinals to Williams, 2-0

Box Score

Middlebury saw its season come to an end with a 2-0 loss to Williams, as the hosts scored a pair of second-half goals in a span of 5:08 during a NESCAC semifinal game on Cole Field. The sixth-ranked Ephs improve to 16-1 and will play in tomorrow's conference final, while the Panthers finish at 10-7.

In the first half, the Ephs had a scoring chance early in the stanza. Crystal Lewin received a ball from Alison Magruder on the left side of the field looking for Audrey Thomas, who ran onto the ball and worked her way forward into the Panther penalty area. Panther defender Molly Parizeau thwarted the scoring chance.

The Panthers had their first real chance of the game in the 23rd minute when Carter Talgo won a corner on the right side of the pitch taken by Moria Sloan. Sloan's out-swinging cross into the penalty area deflected to the top of the box, falling to the feet of Hannah Robinson, but Williams' Kristi Kirshe got in front of Robinson's shot and blocked it away.

The best chance of the half for the Ephs came in the 28th minute, as Kirshe played a pass between the Panther central defenders to Louisa Costa. In a one-on-one situation with Middlebury goalie Emily Eslinger, Costa couldn't quite lift her shot over the outstretched hand of the charging keeper.

Middlebury had one of its best scoring chances of the day in the 38th minute. Sloan took another corner from the right side and sent a ball to the back post toward Sophia Kligler, who headed the ball and beat both her defender and Williams' goalie Hannah Van Wetter. Kligler's shot hit the crossbar and the match remained scoreless headed to the half.

Not much changed between the first and the second halves, as both teams were still looking to break into the scoring column. In the 67th minute, the Panthers won a free kick near the left corner flag. Sloan placed an in-swinging ball that Van Wetter got her fists on as she attempted to punch the ball out of danger. The ensuing rebound fell to Talgo whose shot from 10 yards out sailed high.

Williams produced its first goal in the 72nd minute. A pass back to Eslinger was mishandled, allowing for Magruder to collect the ball on the right side of goal, take a couple of touches, and bury the ball into the back of an empty net.

In the 77th minute, Lewin collected an attempted clearance by the Panthers on the right wing and sent a cross into the box to Kirshe, who elevated over her defender and placed a header past Eslinger.

Williams held a 17-9 advantage in shots, while Middlebury had an 8-2 edge in corner kicks. Eslinger made six saves for the Panthers, while Van Wetter needed just one save in the shutout.
