The Middlebury women's cross country team posted a runner-up finish, while the men's squad finished eighth during the 2014 Open New England Championships at Franklin Park in Boston. The second-place showing for the women marked the best finish at the event in program history, as both teams respective finishes were the best among Division III teams racing. Each field featured nearly 40 teams from all three NCAA divisions.
Alison Maxwell led the Middlebury women, who finished second with 162 points only behind New Hampshire's 61, over the 5K course. Maxwell stopped the clock with an 11th-place finish overall (18:00.2) as Middlebury's scorers were separated by just under 31 seconds. Not far behind Maxwell was Summer Spillane in 24th place (18:12.1), followed by Adrian Walsh in 36th (18:21.9). Placing 45th overall for Middlebury was Katie Carlson in 18:28.8, while Addis Fouche-Channer rounded out the team's scorers in 50th place (18:31.1).
On the men's side, Wilder Schaaf was the team's top performer, finishing the race in a program-record 8K time of 24:46.6, good for seventh place. Schaaf's finish marks the highest individual showing in men's program history, and he also earned All-New England honors. Kevin Wood wasn't far behind with a 15th-place finish (24:56.5), followed by Sebastian Matt in 73rd place (25:33.1).Sam Klockenkemper posted an 81st-place time of 25:37.3, while Jacob Fox completed the scoring contingent with a time of 25:53.7, good for 115th place.
The teams will return to action next Saturday when they compete in the Albany Invitational. The men's race is scheduled to begin at noon, while the women will run at 1:00 p.m.
