Middlebury scored three goals in a 1:42 span in the second period on its way to a 4-0 win over Bowdoin (8-6-1, 3-3-1) in NESCAC action on Friday night in Kenyon Arena. The second-ranked Panthers (11-1-2, 7-0-2) held a slim 19-18 shots advantage in the game, with Annabelle Jones making 18 saves en route to her seventh career shutout. The teams will face-off again on Saturday with game time set for 3:00 p.m.
Bowdoin controlled much of the first period, but was unable to capitalize on a pair of power plays despite holding an 8-1 shots advantage in the first 20 minutes.
The Polar Bears had a great chance to score 3:30 into the second period, but Ariana Bourque was denied on a breakaway by a nice stop from Jones.
Middlebury's three-goal spurt began at the 5:01 mark when Hannah Bielawski made a goal line pass to Katie Sullivan for the quick redirect on the far side for the 1-0 lead. Just 26 seconds later, the Panthers made it a 2-0 game with a power play goal. Emily Fluke found Sara Ugalde on the right side, as she snapped a shot into the back of the net for her seventh of the year. The lead increased to 3-0 at 6:64 when Sullivan scored her team-leading 10th of the season, converting a two-on-one feed from Jennifer Krakower. The period ended with the Panthers holding an 11-3 shots advantage and a 3-0 lead.
Lan Crofton kept Bowdoin in the game early in the third, stopping Carly Watson who broke in all alone. The Panthers had a five-on-three power play for 50 seconds at the 4:44 mark, but were unable to take advantage. Middlebury netted its second power play tally at the 6:46 mark when Katie Mandigo netted her fifth of the year, tipping in a shot from Julia Wardwell.
Crofton finished with 15 stops for the Polar Bears, with the Panthers going 2-8 on the power play.
Tonight's contest marked the 100th career game for Panther seniors Madeline Joyce and Krakower, and also saw the return of former Panther Julia Ireland '11, who served as team captain during their rookie season. Ireland was an assistant coach for Middlebury the past two years, before taking a spot behind the Bowdoin bench as an assistant coach this winter.
