Panthers Open Carnival Season With Third Place Finish

1/22/05 - The Middlebury College alpine and nordic ski teams opened up the carnival circuit with a third place finish at the Bates Carnival in Maine. Vermont won the season-opener, followed by Dartmouth and Middlebury. The men's and women's classical relay races were cancelled, due to the cold temperatures.

In the women's giant slalom race, sophomore Lindsay Brush (Charlotte, Vt.) led the Middlebury racers in sixth place with a time of 2:03.25. Just behind her at 2:03.37 was first-year racer Krissy Poehling (LaCrosse, Wis.), followed by sophomore Tara Martin (Lyndonville, Vt.) in 15th place with a time of 2:05.44. In the slalom, senior Jessica Smith (Rockport, Maine) led the pack in seventh place with a time of 1:38.12. Brush was next for the Panthers in ninth place (1:38.34), followed by Martin in 11th (1:39.14)

On the men's side, junior David Coriell (Killington, Vt.) looked strong with a fifth place finish in the giant slalom with a time of 1:57.07. Finishing 10th in the race was senior John Rusten (Federal Way, Wash.) with a time of 1:57.50, followed by first-year racer Joey Swensson (Niantic, Conn.) in 15th (1:57.82). Middlebury looked solid in the slalom, with three racers in the top three. Rusten and rookie Clayton Reed (Stowe, Vt.) led the pack in a second place tie (1:49.41), followed by Coriell in sixth (1:51.13).

In the women's 10K freestyle race, junior Jenny Jorvig (Minnetonka, Minn.) was Middlebury's top finisher in 14th place with a time of 32:11. Finishing 23rd in the race was sophomore Erin Pittenger (McCall, Idaho) in 32:53, followed by junior Taylor Leach (Old Forge, N.Y.) in 24th place (32:54.).

Junior Garrott Kuzzy (Minneapolis, Minn.) led the men's team with a fifth place finish (37:59) in the 15K freestyle race. Junior Jake Whitcomb (Worthington, Mass.) finished 13th in the race with a time of 39:48, followed by first-year racer Jimmy Ades (Shelburne, Vt.) in 15th place (39:51). Results
