Volleyball Sweeps Vermont State Castleton In Home Lidlifter

The Middlebury volleyball team held Vermont State University Castleton to a .048 hitting percentage and logged 16 service aces as the navy and white swept their in-state foe on Wednesday from Pepin Gymnasium.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Natalie Stanford provided a hot start for the Panthers, logging four kills to kickstart an 8-3 lead in the opening set.
  • The visitors responded, ripping off six of the next eight points to trim the deficit to 10-9 and force a stoppage. Madison Sheehan led the charge with three successful swings.
  • Middlebury battled back, as kills by Molly MacDonald and Mischa Pendleton bookended an 11-4 spurt to give the hosts a 21-13 lead. 
  • Pendleton sealed the set (25-17) with her fourth kill of the frame.
  • After falling behind 3-0 to commence the second stanza, the Panthers tallied another charge. Five combined successful swings by Molly Harrison and Gabby Pribisich paired with three service aces apiece from Annabella Rando and Caroline Byrne headlined 19 of the next 23 points to grow a 19-7 lead.
  • The visitors could not get any closer in the set, as Middlebury tallied six of the last nine points for a 25-10 victory.
  • VTSU Castleton tallied the first point of the third frame, but the hosts ran wild again. Four different Panthers tallied aces and kills to charge out to a 17-7 advantage.
  • The Spartans chipped away at the deficit. Successful swings by Jocelyn and Sheehan helped spark six of the next 10 to make the score 21-13.
  • An attack error proved costly for the guests, as it capped a run to end the set (25-16) and seal a Middlebury sweep.

NOTES

  • Stanford led the Middlebury attack with seven kills, while Harrison and Pendleton followed behind with six apiece.
  • Byrne was an ace from the service line, tallying a career-high six as part of 16 for the Panthers. The output marks the third time this season that the navy and white have produced double-digit aces.
  • With her 13 digs, Rando surpasses the 1,000 mark in a Panther uniform. 
  • Middlebury and VTSU Castleton met for the second time in volleyball.

The Panthers open up conference play at Amherst on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
