The Middlebury men's basketball team outscored Vermont State University Johnson 52-27 in the second half of Tuesday evening's 97-76 triumph from Pepin Gymnasium. Six Panthers reached double-digits in the win.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The sides traded baskets early in the contest before Evan Flaks connected from beyond the arc and added a layup 37 seconds later to push the Panthers in front (9-5) through 2:09 of action.
- Sawyer Ramey answered two charity tosses from Jason Baker with four points to spearhead a 6-0 jolt and increase the lead to 15-7 with 14:59 showing.
- The guests flipped the script 50 ticks later, draining six three-pointers to power a 22-4 run spanning nearly five minutes that established a 10-point advantage for VTSU Johnson at 29-19.
- Devin Merker provided a much-needed spark, netting seven points to headline a 16-6 stretch over nearly five minutes that knotted the tilt at 35-35 with 15:10 expired.
- Matthew Carter dropped in seven points to help the Badgers outpace the hosts 14-8 in the ensuing four minutes before a Justin Fuerbacher layup cut the deficit to 49-45 at the break.
- The navy and white sandwiched a Jordan Chisholm three with eight points from four different players to nab a one-point edge (53-52) with 17:53 to play.
- Following 2:29 of scoreless basketball, Kuba Cwalina logged his first of five buckets over the ensuing 10:35 to ignite a blistering 39-11 surge that made the score 92-63 and put the game out of reach. Merker and Flaks chipped in seven points as Middlebury connected on seven three-pointers in the swell.
- The Badgers outscored the Panthers 13-5 in the final 4:21, but the hosts cruised to the 97-76 triumph.
NOTES
- Ramey finished with a career-high 16 points, leading the squad in scoring for the second consecutive game.
- Merker enjoyed his best outing in a Middlebury uniform, tallying 15 points.
- Flaks finished with 14 on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor.
- Cwalina (13), Fuerbacher (12) and Edward Witherington (10) rounded out the double-digit scorers.
- The programs squared off for the 26th time, with Middlebury winning each matchup.
