Flaks’ Career Evening Spoiled in Final Seconds Against Bowdoin

The Middlebury men's basketball team rallied in the final minutes of Friday's battle against Bowdoin, but a three-pointer with 16 seconds remaining helped the Polar Bears escape with a 77-76 decision.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The teams traded five ties and small leads over the first 9:40 of action. Deadlocked at 20-20, a free throw from Ian Murray gave the Panthers a 21-20 edge.
  • Trailing 22-21 with 8:11 left in the opening half, Flaks dropped in seven points to power a 9-2 surge over four minutes of action to establish a 30-24 lead.
  • The sides seesawed over the final 3:40, with Middlebury narrowly outpacing its foe 8-7 in the span. In the final seconds of the half, Flaks knocked down a jumper to lead by nine (40-31) at the break.
  • After conceding the first points of the second session, Bowdoin manufactured a 15-0 jolt, capped by a three-pointer from Alex Halpern, to flip the script and build a 46-42 advantage.
  • Kuba Cwalina drained consecutive shots from beyond the arc (48-46) before Benedek Maly and Mason Dawkins combined for nine points during an 11-0 Polar Bear spurt, opening up a 57-48 margin with 8:21 elapsed.
  • The back-and-forth battle continued late in the affair. Kevin Reeves logged seven points across the ensuing six minutes to help the hosts outpace their opposition 13-11, moving ahead 70-59 with 5:45 remaining.
  • Murray started and ended a 9-0 run with layups that sliced the deficit to 70-68 less than a minute later. After four Bowdoin tallies, Murray and Cwalina connected from range to give the Panthers eight consecutive points and a 76-74 lead.
  • Ray Cuevas found the cylinder for the game-winner with 16 seconds left to make it a 77-76 contest.
  • The visitors had a final attempt in the waning seconds but couldn't convert as the Polar Bears hung on for the 77-76 decision.

  • Flaks logged a career-high 32 points in the battle, marking the highest single-game output for any Panther this season. He netted 26 of his points in the first half.
  • Friday's contest against Bowdoin was the 2,200th game in the Middlebury men's basketball program's history.
  • The sides met for the 59th time, with the Panthers owning a narrow 30-29 edge in the series.
Middlebury plays its final road contest of the regular season on Saturday against Colby at 3:00 p.m.
