Pair of First-Quarter Tallies Propels #2 Panthers Past Trinity on Senior Day

The #2 Middlebury field hockey team scored a pair of goals during Saturday's first quarter to top Trinity 2-0 on Senior Day.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers got on the board with just 2:23 expired in the opening stanza. Abigail Weidner came out strong in her first start of the year, drawing a penalty corner to set Middlebury up for the score. Emma McCann inserted the ball before Tessa Herbst stopped it and Ally Kennedy blasted a pass that glanced off McCann's stick and into the back of the cage.
  • Middlebury took a 2-0 lead at the 6:06 mark. McCann inserted a penalty corner and later tipped an initial shot by Megan Fuqua on the left pipe.
  • The Bantams looked to break through with back-to-back penalty corners beginning at the 12:08 mark. On the second attempt, Alison Gerber wound up at the top right of the circle and whipped a shot that sailed just left of the post.
  • Trinity had a great chance to slice the Panther advantage in half with just over a minute left in the second frame. Ava DiPasquale dribbled the ball from near midfield into the circle, which forced goalie Izzy Redzic to come off her line. DiPasquale was able to slip the shot by, but Lily Stockwell was on the goal line to deny the chance and preserve the two-goal advantage at the break.
  • Middlebury threatened to tack on another tally with 1:35 elapsed in the final quarter, but goalie Sydney Korkosz used her glove to deny a reverse chip bid from Claire McMichael.
  • The Panthers had a final attempt to increase the advantage with just under seven minutes remaining, but Korkosz dove to her right and just got a piece of McCann's shot as Middlebury secured the 2-0 triumph.
