Late Run Pushes Men’s Basketball Past Ephs 76-73

The Middlebury men's basketball team tallied the final six points of Saturday's contest in a thrilling 76-73 triumph over Williams from Pepin Gymnasium.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The sides traded small leads over the six minutes before a driving layup by Ian Murray gave the Panthers an 11-8 edge with 14:09 left in the opening half.
  • The Ephs pulled within 14-12 on an EJ Sommers bucket 90 seconds later.
  • Middlebury manufactured a 12-3 surge spanning 4:29 of action to grab a 26-15 lead. Sawyer Ramey kick-started the spurt with a floating right-handed jumper, while Edward Witherington capped the spurt via a three-point field goal.
  • The hosts maintained a near double-digit advantage over the remainder of the stanza, as a pull-up jumper by Henry Morrison gave the Panthers a 44-32 lead at the half.
  • Trailing 56-46 with 5:30 expired in the second frame, Williams posted 10 of the next 13 points to make it a 59-56 contest with 10:37 left.
  • The Panthers answered with a quick five points on a shot from beyond the arc from Kuba Cwalina and a reverse layup by Witherington to rebuild an eight-point cushion.
  • Williams slowly whittled down the deficit, deadlocking the score at 70-70 with 2:52 remaining on a bucket in the paint by Jackson Rein.
  • The visitors took a 73-70 edge on their next trip down the floor when Onyeraluobu Chibuogwu converted a shot from beyond the arc.
  • A pair of Witherington charity tosses brought the Panthers within one (73-72) with 1:32 showing on the clock.
  • After a defensive stop, Middlebury called a timeout. Running some time off the clock, Murray wiggled his way through traffic before scoring on an acrobatic layup for a 74-73 edge with 15 ticks left.
  • Following an Eph stoppage, Murray missed the free throw, but Dominick Ducree grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled. The rookie knocked down both charity tosses for a three-point lead.
  • Williams raced the ball up the floor, looking to tie the contest. Rein launched a deep three that was off the mark, giving the Panthers an exciting 76-73 triumph.
NOTES
  • Ducree finished with 12 points in 21 minutes off the bench. It is his seventh-straight game tallying double-digit points.
  • Murray posted a solid all-around game with 13 points, a career-best nine rebounds and four assists.
  • Ramey swiped a collegiate-best four steals to go with five points in the victory.
  • The programs played for the 118th time, with Middlebury winning three of the last four matchups.
The Panthers take to the road on Wednesday for a 5:00 p.m. tipoff at The City College of New York (CCNY).
