Late Charge Comes Up Short As Middlebury Downed By CCNY

The Middlebury men's basketball team fell to the City College of New York (CCNY) 69-66 on Wednesday in Brooklyn. The Beavers utilized an 11-0 run to start the second half and held off a late Panther comeback bid for the three-point triumph.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury moved out to a 15-10 lead with 12:05 left in the opening half, fueled by nine points on a trio of three-point field goals from Kuba Cwalina and two Jackson McKersie buckets.
  • CCNY methodically whittled away at the deficit over the next four minutes, rattling off a 14-4 run to grab a 24-19 advantage on an old-fashioned three-point play by Michael Bowman.
  • The Panthers pulled within three (24-21) via a layup from Oliver Urena with 7:54 showing on the clock. 
  • A three by Camryn Reyes kickstarted an 8-4 surge that gave the hosts their largest lead of the initial stanza at seven (32-25). Capping the output was Abdias Carcamo, canning a shot from beyond the arc with 3:30 left.
  • Middlebury closed out the half with eight of the final 10 points, highlighted by five by Edward Witherington, to move within one (34-33) at the break.
  • The hosts came out of the locker rooms riding a hot-shooting start, building a 45-33 advantage on a layup by Kayson Dinkins with 5:51 expired.
  • Back-to-back threes by Cwalina and Dominick Ducree brought the Panthers back within six (45-39) with 12:05 remaining.
  • The sides traded small runs before a long-range make by Ian Murray made it a 52-48 contest with 7:08 on the clock.
  • The Beavers maintained a narrow edge until a Carmaco three-point play gave CCNY a 63-56 advantage with 54 seconds left.
  • Middlebury was forced to foul and turn up the full-court pressure. Sawyer Ramey fueled the last-minute run, tallying five quick points in 17 seconds.
  • Cwalina whittled the CCNY lead to 68-66 on a pair of free throws with two seconds left.
  • Reyes was fouled and made a charity toss for the final 69-66 decision.
NOTES
  • Cwalina matched his season-best output with 23 points and six made threes. He also added career highs in rebounds and assists with seven and three, respectively.
  • Witherington added seven points and seven boards, while Ramey concluded his contest with nine points.
  • The matchup was the first for the programs in men's basketball.
The Panthers return to action on Sunday when they hit the road to battle NESCAC foe Bates at 1:00 p.m.
