Volleyball Opens Campaign With Sweep Of VTSU Castleton

The Middlebury volleyball team grabbed early leads in each set and never looked back in a 3-0 sweep of Vermont State University Castleton during its season opener on Wednesday. It is the eighth time in the last 10 seasons that the Panthers have opened the campaign with a victory.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Middlebury raced ahead in the opening set, building a 10-4 lead to force a Spartan timeout.
  • The Panthers built on their advantage out of the break. Caroline Byrne and Gabby Pribisich capped three-straight points with a combination block for a 13-4 advantage.
  • Castleton chipped away at the deficit, claiming five of the next seven tallies to cut Middlebury's lead to 15-9. The visitors kept the momentum going, as three service aces in a row by Pribisich highlighted a 10-3 run to give the squad the first stanza, 25-11.
  • Molly Harrison led the charge early in the second frame, tallying two kills to help put the Panthers ahead, 8-3. The hosts responded with a successful attack by Alondra Rojas and a Middlebury error to trim the lead down to three (10-7).
  • The visitors closed out the set strong with a 15-5 blitz to clinch the second frame by a 25-12 score. Ella Beebe and Harrison paced the attack with three kills apiece.
  • Middlebury grabbed a 13-4 advantage in the third set before a successful attack from Madison Sheehan and a Delia Roulston ace bookended four-straight points for the Spartans to make it 13-8.
  • The Panthers continued to roar in the final stanza. A kill by Molly MacDonald sparked nine of the next 13 points to give Middlebury a 22-12 advantage.
  • Castleton put in one final push to slice the deficit to six, but MacDonald sealed the set (25-18) and the triumph with her fourth successful attack of the frame.
