Middlebury Breezes Past St. Lawrence

The Middlebury volleyball team started the North Country Classic with a 3-0 victory over host St. Lawrence on Friday evening. The two-day tournament is being held in the Ronald T. Burkman Gymnasium.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Saints built an early 10-4 lead in the opening set, highlighted by a trio of kills from Araiza Acum-Santos.
  • Following a Middlebury timeout, the Panthers rattled off an 11-2 run, capped by a successful attack by Ava Tuccio, for a 15-12 edge.
  • St. Lawrence leveled the frame at 16-16 with a kill from Bridget Gammons.
  • The Panthers manufactured four of the ensuing five points for a 20-17 advantage. Caroline Byrne had three of the four markers for the visitors.
  • Middlebury maintained small leads before a Saint service error gave the visitors a 25-20 opening-set triumph.
  • Deadlocked at 4-4 in the second stanza, the Panthers recorded five of the next six tallies for a 9-5 edge.
  • The hosts moved to within two (12-10) behind a kill from Acum-Santos, but Middlebury answered with a 6-3 spurt to secure an 18-13 lead on a successful attack by Gabby Pribisich.
  • Ahead 20-16, the Panthers took advantage of four St. Lawrence miscues and a kill by Devin McCormack to earn the 25-17 win.
  • The third frame saw Middlebury ease out to a 13-8 lead on back-to-back scoring swings from Molly Harrison.
  • The Panthers held small leads over the ensuing points, earning a seven-point advantage (17-10) on a kill by Pribisich.
  • Middlebury continued to keep the momentum, completing the sweep behind a service ace by Annabella Rando for the final 25-19 tally.  
NOTES
  • Harrison and Byrne paced a balanced offensive output with eight kills apiece, while Tuccio and Pribisich tacked on eight.
  • Campbell Bartley posted a career-best 35 assists, while Bryne accumulated team-best totals with 11 digs and four service aces.
  • The programs met for the ninth time with the Panthers earning eight triumphs in the all-time series. The three-set victory marked the seventh occasion that Middlebury has swept the Saints.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday with two matches. Middlebury closes out the North Country Classic against St. John Fisher at 11:00 a.m. before traveling to Clarkson to battle the Golden Knights at 3:00 p.m.
