McMichael’s Golden Goal Gives #1 Field Hockey 3-2 OT Win Over #9 Amherst

Claire McMichael tallied the game-winning goal with 1:51 remaining in Saturday's first overtime to secure a 3-2 victory over #9 Amherst from Peter Kohn Field.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The visitors threatened at the 2:51 mark following a penalty corner. Emma Zhang lifted a bid in traffic that was stopped by goalie Izzy Redzic.
  • The Mammoths grabbed a 1-0 lead with seven minutes left in the first quarter. Maya Harrington sent a nearly full-field pass to Chloe Agopian, who blasted a rising shot that deflected off Redzic and into the cage.
  • Middlebury looked for the equalizer at the 8:51 mark of the second quarter. Grace Keefe fired a reverse sweep that bounced off goalie Kate Grady's pad and caromed away.
  • The Panthers were on the doorstep a minute later. Emma McCann forced a turnover deep in the offensive zone and sent a bid that slid left of the cage.
  • Middlebury cashed in following a penalty corner with 13:58 remaining in the third quarter. Emma McNealy flipped a pass between her legs toward Keefe, who rocketed her shot into the left corner to tie the game at 1-1.
  • The Panthers kept the pressure up late in the third frame. With 59 seconds left, Keefe blasted a bid toward the right side of the cage, but Grady slid her pad out to make the stop and keep the contest knotted at one heading to the fourth.
  • Amherst grabbed the lead at the 2:09 mark of the fourth quarter, as a bid by Emily Huehn from just inside the circle sailed into the right corner.
  • With less than two minutes to go in regulation, the Panthers pulled Redzic in favor of an extra attacker. The relentless pressure worked, as Middlebury created consecutive penalty corners that the Mammoths staved off.
  • As the seconds bled down, the Panthers muscled in the game-tying goal with less than 20 seconds remaining. A penalty corner insertion by Sarah Bona slid to Tessa Herbst, who blasted a shot that bounced off Grady's chest. The rebound bounded to the right, where Keefe collected and fired a cross-body shot that snuck inside the left post at the with 2.4 ticks left to make it 2-2 and send the game into overtime.
  • Middlebury came out and pressured the Mammoths in the extra session. Georgianne Defeo raced down the left sideline and grabbed possession before Grady guided her bid aside with 3:05 expired.
  • The Panthers struck gold with 68:09 elapsed following a penalty corner. Keefe sent a shot that ricocheted off Grady's left foot. The Panther hustled to the loose ball on the endline and sent it toward the left side of the cage. McMichael was all alone on the left post and sent the ball over the goal line to seal the overtime triumph.  

NOTES

  • McMichael notched her first goal of the season.
  • Keefe tallied a career-best two scores and five points to lead a Middlebury offense that held a 12-3 advantage in shots on goal.
  • McNealy posted her first assist in a Panther uniform.
  • Redzic secured her 20th career win in goal.
  • Middlebury earned its 18th-straight victory over Amherst.

The Panthers begin a three-game road slate on Tuesday against Skidmore at 4:00 p.m.
