Softball Hands Tufts First NESCAC Loss In Friday Split

The Middlebury softball team earned a split against Tufts in NESCAC action on Friday. The Panthers fell 3-1 in the opener before returning the favor by the same score in the second contest.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Bela Jimenez gave Tufts a 1-0 lead with a leadoff home run to left field to begin the game.
  • Middlebury threatened with runners on first and third in the bottom half, but Sophia DiCocco tallied a strikeout to get out of the jam.
  • The Panthers knotted the contest at 1-1 in the third when Jennifer Westphal brought home Cate Viola with an RBI single up the middle.
  • In the fifth inning, Tufts regained a one-run lead (2-1) on a run-scoring base hit from Heaven Oliva.
  • The visitors tacked on a tally an inning later via a Panther miscue for a 3-1 edge.
  • Middlebury put together a rally in the bottom of the sixth. Olivia Scholes and Westphal recorded back-to-back base knocks and Nina Schroeder moved both runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt. The Panthers could not push anyone across, as DiCocco forced a groundout and strikeout for the two-run victory.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Panthers looked to open the scoring in the bottom of the second. McKenna Lont began the inning with a single up the middle and Schroeder reached on a fielder's choice. Caitlin Stanley loaded the bases with a hit, but Fallon O'Connor twirled a strikeout and forced a double play to keep Middlebury off the board.
  • Tufts gained a 1-0 edge in the third via an RBI single by Lauryn Horita.
  • In the bottom half, Lont crossed the plate on a single by Schroeder to deadlock the contest at 1-1.
  • Middlebury took a 3-1 lead off the bat of Carroll, who brought home two with an RBI double down the left-field line during the fourth frame to plate Stanley and Olivia Fleming who both singled.
  • After allowing a base hit in the fifth, Samantha Hausman retired the next seven batters to seal the 3-1 victory.

NOTES

  • Westphal tallied three hits in game one.
  • Carroll, Lont and Stanley each reached base safely two times in the nightcap.
  • Hausman earned her seventh victory of the year in the circle, giving up just one hit over five innings of work.

Middlebury closes its six-game week with a doubleheader on Sunday at Trinity beginning at 1:00 p.m.
