Panthers Cap NESCAC Weekend With 1-1 Performance At Trinity

The Middlebury softball team exploded in the seventh inning to top Trinity 11-3 in the opener, but fell 4-1 in the second contest to earn a split with the Bantams on Sunday.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers got things going in the second. McKenna Lont walked before later scoring on a groundout by Skylar Wong for the 1-0 edge.
  • Middlebury doubled its advantage (2-0) in its next at-bat, as Olivia Scholes plated Kristyn Carroll with a sacrifice fly.
  • The Panthers tacked on a run in the top of the fifth when Wong scampered home on a throwing error to make it 3-0.
  • Trinity answered in its half of the inning, knotting the contest at 3-3. Lizzie Nelson tallied an unearned run before Taylor Mikolajczak and Abigail Alper crossed the plate on a single to third by Hannah Mullaney.
  • Middlebury took a 4-3 edge in the top of the sixth when Olivia Fleming sent a base knock up the middle to drive in Wong.
  • The Panthers put the game away in the seventh, ripping off seven runs on six hits to build an 11-3 advantage. Four players tallied extra-base knocks in the inning, including a homer by Scholes and an RBI triple from Carroll to left field.
  • The Bantams tried to mount a comeback in their half of the inning. With two outs, Emily Goddard doubled to left center and scored when Mullaney belted one of her own down the left field line. That was as close as the Bantams would get, as Middlebury recorded the final out for the 11-4 triumph.
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
  • In the bottom of the first, Kennedy Rogers belted a homer to left to give Trinity a 1-0 edge.
  • The Bantams increased their advantage to 4-0 in the second inning. Mikolajczak singled through the left side to bring Makenna True home, before a double by Alper drove in a pair.
  • The Panthers got one run back in the top of the fifth when a single by Scholes to center plated Carroll to make it 4-1.
  • Middlebury tried to make a comeback in its final at-bat with runners on first and second, but Trinity was able to record the final out to preserve the 4-1 win.
NOTES
  • In the opener, Wong went 2-3 with three RBI, three runs and a pair of doubles.
  • Carroll was 4-of-6 on the day with a triple, two runs, an RBI and a trio of walks.
  • Lont allowed just one earned run over the seven innings to secure the win in the first game.
  • The second contest of the day was the 10th all-time meeting between the programs.
The Panthers travel to Hamilton on Saturday for a doubleheader, before hosting Williams on Sunday in twinbill action.
