Quick Start Propels #1 Women’s Lacrosse To 16-7 Victory Over #14 Babson

The top-ranked Middlebury women's lacrosse team tallied four unanswered goals en route to a 16-7 triumph over #14 Babson on Tuesday from Peter Kohn Field. The squad had 11 players record at least one point during the victory.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Middlebury scored just 56 seconds into the contest. Skylar Lach took a feed from Siobhan Colin and buried it over the right shoulder of Babson goalie Kathleen Murphy for a 1-0 edge.
  • The Panthers added a pair of markers less than a minute apart. Hope Shue found the bottom right of the net on a free position shot at the 12:01 mark and then dished a pass to Kelcy Dion for a quick-stick tally to make it 3-0 with 11:28 remaining.
  • Lach earned her second of the evening nearly five minutes later, catching a feed from Caroline Adams and darting through traffic for a 4-0 score.
  • Babson stopped the run with 5:54 on the clock. Ellie Manning forced a Panther turnover and dished the ball to Amelia Novitch on the restraining line, who blitzed down the field. Nowitch fired a shot that goalie Gina Driscoll got a piece of with her stick, but the ball trickled in to make it 4-1.
  • The Panthers closed the quarter with three consecutive goals by Maggie Coughlin, Lach and Adams to increase the advantage to 7-1.
  • Middlebury kept its foot on the pedal with a 6-1 run during the second quarter for a 13-2 lead at the break. Shue had two goals during the span, while Dion capped the scoring on a driving shot into the left panel with 16 seconds remaining.
  • Anna Spehr opened the second half with back-to-back tallies off feeds from Jamee Numan and Burdine Atherton, respectively, for a 15-2 score.
  • Babson scored with 9:44 showing on the clock with Jessica Evans driving through a sea of white finding nylon to make it 16-2..
  • Maddie Ocampo drove in and dished it to Atherton, who earned her first marker of the season with 7:03 remaining to make it 16-3. 
  • Ocampo found the final goal of the third stanza with a crisp dodge and dish from Numan, extending the lead to 17-3 heading into the fourth.
  • Babson tallied the final three goals of the contest, all via free positions, for the 17-6 final score.

NOTES

  • Shue led the charge with six points (4G, 2A). She has 227 goals in the Panther uniform, which is second in program history. 
  • Lach had her second hat trick in as many games.
  • Atherton had a career-high four points on a goal and three assists.
  • Middlebury tallied its seventh win in the series against the Beavers.

The Panthers hit the road for a weekend showdown against Bowdoin on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
