Men’s Basketball Suffers Home Loss to Bowdoin

The Middlebury men's basketball fell behind by double-digits early in a 79-64 loss to Bowdoin on Friday night from Pepin Gymnasium.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Polar Bears came out firing to begin the first half, knocking down 10 of their first 12 buckets, capped by a three-point field goal from Ben Chilson for a 25-11 lead with 13:30 remaining.
  • A three from Tristan Joseph sparked an 8-2 run for the home team to cut the deficit to 27-19 at the 9:10 mark. 
  • With 4:01 left in the opening stanza, Kuba Cwalina stepped to the charity stripe and knocked down three free throws to put the squad within five (34-29).
  • Bowdoin rebuilt its lead to 41-29 with seven consecutive points before a three by Maxwell Alberts and two free throws from Evan Flaks made it 41-34 at the half.
  • Middlebury closed the gap to one possession (41-39) with a Cwalina jumper and three from Edward Witherington at the 17:42 mark.
  • The Polar Bears responded with an 8-0 run, extending the lead back out to double-digits (49-39) with 14:23 left.
  • Sawyer Ramey sank a shot from beyond the arc to spearhead seven-straight points for the Panthers, making it a 49-46 ballgame with 11:50 remaining.
  • Bowdoin ripped off 12 unanswered points over the two minutes, highlighted by five points from Nolan Bessire to rebuild the visitor's lead to 59-46.
  • Middlebury would not get any closer than 11 over the remaining 9:19 as the Polar Bears secured the 79-64 triumph.

NOTES

  • Joseph led the Panthers with 16 points and four three-pointers. It's the 11th time the guard has tallied double-digits this season.
  • Middlebury dominated the glass by a 51-38 margin with Witherington (12) and Newell (11) pulling down double-digit boards.
  • The Polar Bears and Panthers met for the 58th time.

Middlebury closes its home weekend with a battle against Colby on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. The Panthers will honor seniors David Brennan, Deam Smith and Sam Stevens before the contest.
