Stellar Third Quarter Helps Women’s Basketball Cruise By Colby-Sawyer

The Middlebury women's basketball team held the Colby-Sawyer Chargers without a made field goal in the third quarter to cruise to a 73-37 victory on Saturday.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Lauren McDonald tallied the game's first bucket and four points in the initial 3:42 of action to lead the Chargers to an 8-4 advantage.
  • The Panthers rallied late in the session, conceding one basket in the final 6:18 alongside a 13-2 surge to lead 17-10 through 10 minutes. Islay Moore and Sarah Chenette combined for nine points in the run.
  • Chenette and Moore logged back-to-back scores to begin the second stanza before a three-pointer from Colby-Sawyer's Makenna Grillone and a layup by Lauren MacDonald trimmed the deficit to 21-15 with 2:21 expired.
  • The guests did not allow a made shot from the floor for over four and a half minutes, but Middlebury went 6-of-8 at the free throw line to keep pace in a 7-6 span (27-17).
  • Calie Messina drained a three-pointer to snap the skid and help the hosts claim seven of the last 11 for a 34-21 advantage at the break.
  • The Panthers took control in the third quarter, outscoring the Chargers 17-4 over the ensuing 10 minutes to secure a 26-point lead (51-25) heading into the final quarter. Messina and Molly Keaveney led the way with five and four points, respectively.
  • Middlebury pulled away in the fourth, stacking 22 points against Colby-Sawyer's 12 to wrap up the 73-37 decision. Frances Doyle contributed four in the final quarter to headline the eight Panther scorers.
NOTES
  • Moore achieved double-digit scoring figures for the third consecutive game, spearheading her side with a career-high 14 points and sharing the team lead with five rebounds.
  • Chenette tallied 12 points and had five boards.
  • Catherine Carrafiello and Emma Kirck aided the glass-cleaning efforts with five rebounds apiece. Kirck's effort also featured four points, three assists and two steals.
  • Middlebury secured 45 or more rebounds for the third-straight contest.
  • The teams matched up for the 43rd time and the first since the 2022-23 campaign. The Panthers own a 30-13 lead in the series, including eight of the last nine contests.
The Panthers are idle until their season resumes in Tacoma, Washington against Puget Sound on Sunday, December 29 at 5:00 p.m. ET.
