Middlebury Sees Winning Streak End Against Puget Sound

The Middlebury women's basketball team put together a late comeback bid but ultimately dropped a 42-36 decision against the University of Puget Sound on Monday in Tacoma, Washington. The result halted the squad's four-game winning streak.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers established an early 5-0 edge through the initial 2:52 of the contest, headlined by a three-point make and a successful free throw from Gabby Stuart.
  • Paige Oh helped the Loggers close the opening quarter on a 9-3 run, draining a stepback shot from beyond the arc before dropping in a layup to help the hosts take a 9-8 lead through 10 minutes.
  • The first points of the second frame came at the 6:41 mark when Mele Sake widened the Puget Sound lead to three (11-8).
  • Islay Moore netted four-consecutive Middlebury points before the Loggers concluded the second stanza with an 8-2 surge, highlighted by five points on a pair of baskets from Hailey Quiggle, to lead 19-14 at the break.
  • Following three scoreless minutes, Sake connected on the third session's first bucket to extend the hosts' advantage to seven (21-14).
  • Stuart sparked a 6-0 Panther spurt in the ensuing 2:27 with a layup and two successful tries from the stripe, narrowing the margin to 21-20 with 5:28 expired.
  • Three Loggers scored amidst a 7-2 stint spanning 3:15 late in the quarter, pushing Puget Sound in front by six. Islay Moore converted a three-point play with 1:01 left to trim the margin to 28-25 heading to the final frame.
  • After another defensive start to the quarter, Quiggle and Carmen Cruz ignited a 7-0 run to extend the edge to double-digits (35-25) with 4:25 remaining. Middlebury outscored its foe 11-7 in the final four minutes, but Puget Sound kept the visitors at bay to earn the 42-36 decision.
NOTES
  • Moore posted double-digit scoring figures for the fourth-straight contest, tallying a game-high 12 points.
  • Stuart contributed 11 points and added three steals.
  • Monday's tilt was the first between the institutions in women's basketball.
The Panthers return to west coast action tomorrow against Pacific Lutheran at 5:00 p.m. EST.
