Women’s Basketball Closes West Coast Swing With Victory Over Pacific Lutheran

A 22-9 lead after the opening quarter helped catapult the Middlebury women's basketball team to a 79-46 victory over Pacific Lutheran on Monday. The contest capped a two-game West Coast road trip for the program.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Calie Messina caught fire from beyond the three-point arc to open the game, nailing three straight to push the Panthers ahead 9-2 with 7:24 remaining in the first stanza.
  • The guests continued to stretch their lead as Islay Moore kicked off a 12-4 spurt spanning 4:56 with a hook shot and a three-pointer, making the score 22-6 at the 1:56 mark.
  • Pacific Lutheran looked for a boost to close the quarter, as Kate Wooten and Lilli Williams converted three free throws for a 22-9 deficit.
  • The blue and white kept its foot on the gas pedal in the second stanza via an 11-3 run to stretch the advantage to 21 (33-12) at the 5:54 mark. Moore led the charge with eight points.
  • The sides traded baskets to close the frame. Kiley McMahon led all scorers with six points, while Moore and Brooke Collins had five apiece, as Middlebury held a 42-23 lead at the half.
  • Emma Kirck nailed consecutive buckets in the opening two minutes of the third. The spurt swelled to 10 of 14 points for the Panthers, making it 52-27 at the 6:00 mark.
  • The Panthers continued to build their advantage, ending the quarter on a 13-5 surge for a 63-32 score heading into the final 10 minutes.
  • The programs combined for 35 points in the fourth as the Panthers cruised to an 81-49 win.

NOTES

  • Moore set a career-high output with 18 points in just 23 minutes of action. The rookie also converted four three-pointers. 
  • Margot Newman grabbed a team-high nine rebounds to go alongside seven points and four assists.
  • Messina tallied 17 points and shot five of six from beyond the arc. 
  • Middlebury held a 50-38 advantage on the boards and had 24 points off 16 Logger turnovers.
  • The program's 81 points are the most in a non-conference action since an 81-60 win over Plattsburgh State on December 8, 2021.
  • The schools met for the first time in women's basketball.

The Panthers return to Pepin Gymnasium for two games in four days, starting on Saturday against St. Lawrence at 1:00 p.m.
