Late Rally Not Enough as Men’s Basketball Falls to Wheaton

The Middlebury men's basketball team cut the deficit to three with 34 seconds remaining, but late free throws helped Wheaton deny the late rush in an 82-78 decision on Sunday. The matchup was the second of the Dr. Carol V. De Costa/Go 4 the Goal Tournament hosted by Medgar Evers.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Lyons came out firing to begin the contest, building a 19-11 advantage with 13:25 remaining in the opening half. Dimetri Lafrate led Wheaton with six points during the stretch.
  • Middlebury found its footing in the ensuing minutes. A jumper by Sawyer Ramey kicked off an 11-5 run to trim the margin to 24-22 with 9:49 expired..
  • The Panthers knotted the game at 28-28 with 7:12 remaining on a layup from Mark Newell. Wheaton answered the score with 10 consecutive points to rebuild a 38-28 lead with 4:02 to play before the break.
  • Both sides alternated buckets until Donovan Lee tallied the final point of the opener with a free throw for a 40-31 contest at the half.
  • Middlebury came out firing in the opening minutes of the second stanza. Evan Flaks bookended a quick 6-2 spurt with a jumper to cut Wheaton's lead to 42-37 with 1:39 elapsed.

  • A three-pointer by Dominick Ducree swelled into an 18-11 Middlebury surge to move within four (61-57) with 7:40 remaining.
  • Both teams traded buckets late in the contest until  Ducree found nylon on three-straight attempts from range spanning 2:28, keeping the Panthers within three (71-68) at the 3:36 mark.
  • Middlebury had a chance to knot the contest after forcing a Lyon turnover with 31 seconds left, but a turnover underneath the basket proved costly as Wheaton sank three late free throws to seal the four-point win.
