The Middlebury men's basketball team cut the deficit to three with 34 seconds remaining, but late free throws helped Wheaton deny the late rush in an 82-78 decision on Sunday. The matchup was the second of the Dr. Carol V. De Costa/Go 4 the Goal Tournament hosted by Medgar Evers.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Lyons came out firing to begin the contest, building a 19-11 advantage with 13:25 remaining in the opening half. Dimetri Lafrate led Wheaton with six points during the stretch.
- Middlebury found its footing in the ensuing minutes. A jumper by Sawyer Ramey kicked off an 11-5 run to trim the margin to 24-22 with 9:49 expired..
- The Panthers knotted the game at 28-28 with 7:12 remaining on a layup from Mark Newell. Wheaton answered the score with 10 consecutive points to rebuild a 38-28 lead with 4:02 to play before the break.
- Both sides alternated buckets until Donovan Lee tallied the final point of the opener with a free throw for a 40-31 contest at the half.
- Middlebury came out firing in the opening minutes of the second stanza. Evan Flaks bookended a quick 6-2 spurt with a jumper to cut Wheaton's lead to 42-37 with 1:39 elapsed.
- The Lyons answered the Panther charge by scoring eight of the next 10 points to establish a 50-39 edge at the 6:07 mark. Sean Perri headlined the run with two three-pointers.
- A three-pointer by Dominick Ducree swelled into an 18-11 Middlebury surge to move within four (61-57) with 7:40 remaining.
- Both teams traded buckets late in the contest until Ducree found nylon on three-straight attempts from range spanning 2:28, keeping the Panthers within three (71-68) at the 3:36 mark.
- Middlebury had a chance to knot the contest after forcing a Lyon turnover with 31 seconds left, but a turnover underneath the basket proved costly as Wheaton sank three late free throws to seal the four-point win.
NOTES
- Ducree led the Panthers with a career-high 27 points and six three-pointers. It marks his third effort with 20 or more points this season.
- Newell secured his initial double-double of the campaign, scoring 11 points and adding 12 rebounds. His glass-cleaning effort was his best in a Middlebury uniform.
- Justin Fuerbacher and Ramey rounded out the top scorers with nine points each.
- Sunday's matchup was the first between the programs in men's basketball.
The Panthers return to action for the consolation contest of the tournament against Medgar Evers on Monday at 12:00 p.m.
