Panthers Use Quick Start to Down Medgar Evers 91-47

The Middlebury men's basketball team tallied 19 of Monday's first 24 points on its way to a convincing 91-47 victory over Medgar Evers. The contest was the consolation game of the Dr. Carol V. De Costa/Go 4 the Goal Tournament hosted by the Cougars.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers raced out to a 19-5 lead in the opening 6:35 of the first half, fueled by six points each from Justin Fuerbacher and Dominick Ducree. The first-year guard completed a four-point play to cap the surge.
  • Medgar Evers rattled off a 6-2 spurt over the next 1:17 of action, cutting the deficit to 10 (21-11) on a three-point basket by Rhommy Holder.
  • The visitors posted the next 11 points spanning 3:47, building a 32-11 lead after a pair of free throws by Ian Murray with 8:21 left.
  • Middlebury maintained a double-digit advantage over the remainder of the stanza. A layup by Ducree gave the Panthers a 40-25 advantage at the break.
  • The Cougars made it a 13-point game (42-29) on two charity tosses from Joash Beaton with 1:58 expired in the second half.
  • Middlebury rattled off the ensuing 11 points, highlighted by a deep three from the left wing by Ducree, to take a 53-29 lead at the 15:15 mark.
  • The Panthers used continued production on the offensive end to cruise to the triumph, growing their lead to 44 (91-47) on a shot from beyond the arc by Devin Merker.
NOTES
  • Ducree was named to the all-tournament team, finishing with 48 points, eight rebounds and nine three-point makes over the two games. He posted a career-high 27 points in Sunday's matchup with Wheaton.
  • Middlebury featured a balanced offensive effort with 12 different players finding the scoring column, paced by Ducree's 21.
  • Kuba Cwalina tallied 11 points off the bench, signifying the eighth time in nine games this winter that he has accumulated double figures.
  • Jackson McKersie had a nice all-around game, ending with career highs in rebounds (nine) and assists (four) alongside six points in 14 minutes.
  • Mark Newell pulled down a career-best 15 rebounds to power a decisive 69-25 advantage on the boards. The 69 caroms were just two shy of a Middlebury single-game record.
  • The contest was just the second meeting between the schools in men's basketball with the Panthers earning a 99-45 home triumph on November 22, 2014.
Middlebury returns to action on Friday when it hosts Lasell at 5:00 p.m.
