The Middlebury women's basketball team put together a strong first half, highlighted by a 20-5 second-quarter output, to secure a 62-49 home triumph over Skidmore on Tuesday.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Sarah Chenette scored five of the Panthers' initial seven points as the sides traded baskets in the early minutes of the opening quarter. Madison Meyer connected on a jumper with 5:52 remaining to bring the visitors within one (7-6).
- Islay Moore tallied six points to spark an 11-3 Middlebury surge to close the stanza and grant the hosts an 18-9 edge.
- Following a Thoroughbred three-pointer from Sara Hastie, the Panthers posted seven unanswered points for a 26-12 advantage with 2:28 elapsed in the second frame. Teagan Lind scored six points in the sequence.
- Melissa Severino snapped a four-minute scoreless stretch for either side with a driving layup at the 3:26 mark.
- Middlebury parried with a barrage from distance as Molly Keaveney and Calie Messina combined to sink four consecutive threes in the final 2:23, setting the halftime score of 38-14.
- Skidmore found its stride early in the third frame with six consecutive points. Sophia Martinez and Stella Criniti each connected from the floor for a 40-20 score with 4:02 expired.
- Gabby Stuart, Chenette and Moore each recorded a bucket in a 6-3 spurt for a 46-23 advantage.
- Meghan Drury dialed up a pair of baskets from three-point range to lead a 9-3 response from the Thoroughbreds, cutting the gap to 17 (49-32) with two minutes to play.
- Margot Newman and Moore connected from the floor before the quarter expired, for a 53-35 advantage with 10 minutes remaining.
- The Panthers maintained the double-digit lead over the final quarter on their way to a 62-49 triumph.
NOTES
- Moore scored a team-high 11 points and was one of three Middlebury players to secure eight rebounds.
- Stuart posted a solid all-around effort with 10 points, five boards, four steals, three steals and two blocked shots.
- Kirck and Chenette each nabbed eight rebounds in the win. Kirck tacked on three assists and three steals, while Chenette contributed eight points.
- Tuesday's meeting was the 47th between the programs with the Panthers holding a 30-17 advantage.
Middlebury hosts Colby-Sawyer on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the squad's final home contest of the calendar year.
