The Middlebury women's basketball team led by as many as 16 points in the fourth quarter en route to a 50-40 victory against Oswego State on Sunday inside Pepin Gymnasium.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Lakers netted the first five points of the contest, capped by a three-pointer from Zhane Holmes with 2:38 expired.
- Gabby Stuart dropped in a free throw before Calie Messina buried her first attempt from range with 5:42 left to cut the lead to one (5-4).
- Stuart and Oswego State's Sarah Hirschler battled through the remainder of the quarter, with the Panther outdueling her counterpart 4-3 to knot the contest at 8-8 after 10 minutes of action.
- The Lakers tallied four unanswered points to begin the second session, but Middlebury responded with eight of the next 10 to secure its first lead (16-14) with 5:39 gone in the stanza. Emma Kirck capped the spurt with a layup.
- Holmes knotted the contest with a jumper before consecutive three-pointers by Islay Moore and Messina put the hosts ahead 22-16 at the break.
- Moore took over in the early minutes of the second half, pouring in 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting to power a 12-2 surge and a 34-18 Middlebury lead with 5:26 played in the third frame.
- Giavanna White-Principio headlined the Laker efforts late in the session, tallying eight points to trim the advantage to 39-26 heading into the final 10 minutes.
- The visitors narrowly outpaced the Panthers (14-11) in the fourth quarter but could not get any closer as Middlebury secured the 50-40 victory.
NOTES
- Messina led the Middlebury scorers with 16 points and four made three-pointers. It is her fifth consecutive effort with 10 or more points to begin the campaign.
- Moore logged her first double-double in the navy and white, matching her career-highs in points (13) and rebounds (12).
- Stuart rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points while hauling in seven boards.
- The Panthers grabbed a season-high 47 rebounds in the win.
- The programs played for just the second time after the Panthers secured a 66-49 triumph last winter.
Middlebury returns to Pepin Gymnasium on Tuesday, hosting Skidmore at 5:30 p.m.
