Volleyball Swept at #17 Wesleyan

The Middlebury volleyball team dropped Saturday's contest at #17 Wesleyan by a 3-0 decision.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Deadlocked at 13-13 in the initial session, Siena Steines and Mila Chan each tallied pairs of scoring swings to power a 9-1 Cardinal run, pushing the hosts ahead 22-14.
  • The NESCAC foes split the final six points to give Wesleyan a 25-17 victory in the first set. Molly MacDonald and Caroline Byrne combined for three kills in the sequence.
  • Four different Cardinals logged accurate attacks to spark a 7-1 surge early in the second session.
  • Wesleyan built its lead to 17-9 by claiming 10 of the ensuing 18 points to lead 17-9. Sophia Lindus logged a trio of scoring swings in the span.
  • The visitors stormed back with a quick 6-1 burst, headlined by two kills from Devin McCormack, cutting the margin to 18-15 and force a Cardinal stoppage.
  • Middlebury took five of the next eight points to bring the frame within one (21-20), but three consecutive accurate attacks from Lindus helped the hosts take the second set, 25-20.
  • Tied at 8-8 in the final stanza, Carly Grumet and Elliana Moreno logged scoring swings to lead three consecutive points for the hosts. Ava Tuccio and Molly Harrison parried the run with a kill each to knot the set at 11-11.
  • Led by three accurate attacks from Harrison, the Panthers nabbed seven of the next 12 points to establish an 18-16 lead.
  • Grumet and Lindus combined for six scoring swings in the final 12 points, powering a 9-3 run to help claim the set (25-21) and the match.
NOTES
  • Harrison recorded 14 kills and posted a .355 hitting percentage. Campbell Bartley tallied her third double-double of the campaign with 31 helpers and 10 digs.
  • The programs competed for the 36th time.
Middlebury ships out to the New England Challenge at Springfield College next weekend, opening its three-match slate on Friday against Babson at 7:00 p.m.
