Game Recap: Field Hockey |

#4 Field Hockey Downed By #14 Wesleyan In Double Overtime

The #4 Middlebury field hockey team scored first in Sunday's contest, but #14 Wesleyan recorded the final two tallies, including the game-winner with 1:23 left in the second overtime, for a 2-1 decision.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Cardinals had the first quality chance with 6:22 expired in the first quarter. Emily Smith found space in the circle, but Panther goalie Izzy Redzic charged off her line and denied Smith with her pads.
  • Middlebury had a solid opportunity five minutes later on a turnaround attempt from Georgianne Defeo that whistled just wide of the left post.
  • Defeo nearly got the hosts on the scoreboard with 3:27 into the second stanza with her tipped bid sailing outside the left post.
  • The Panthers broke into the scoring column with 6:16 showing on the clock. An initial shot by Tessa Herbst was saved on the post by defender Kiernan McColgan. The rebound bounced to the stick of Hadley Crowther, who tapped the ball inside the right side of the cage for the 1-0 lead.
  • The visitors manufactured an opportunity with 6:19 gone in the third frame. A spinning shot from Meera Patel was stopped by Redzic.
  • Addie Chandler had a bid six minutes later from the right side denied by the pad of Cardinal goalie Audrey Pace.
  • Wesleyan knotted the contest with 56 seconds left in the quarter. Brooke Miner sent a pass across the cage from right to left, finding the stick of Smith, who redirected into the left side to make it a 1-1 score.
  • The Panthers looked for the go-ahead goal with 2:37 expired in the fourth frame. Grace Keefe centered and fired a knuckling blast that was saved by Pace.
  • A majority of the final 12 minutes were played in the midfield as the sides went into overtime.
  • After neither team produced a shot on goal in the first overtime, a shot from inside the circle by Miner was saved by the right pad of Redzic with 1:49 elapsed in the second 10-minute stanza.
  • Miner rifled a blast that was destined for the far post two minutes into the second overtime. Redzic extended her right pad and made the quality save.
  • The Panthers had a golden chance with 2:19 left on a breakaway, but Pace came charging off her line and stuffed a shot from Emma McCann.
  • Seconds later, the Cardinals transitioned the ball up the field. Natalie Shaw posted up on the left side and sent a pass back to Smith, who pushed a shot past Redzic with 1:23 remaining for the 2-1 win.
