Tristan Joseph of the Middlebury men's basketball team sank a shot from beyond the arc to beat the buzzer and help the Panthers edge Williams 71-70. The team trailed by as many as 18 points in the opening half, before utilizing a late 20-3 run in the second to secure the come-from-behind triumph.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Down 6-5 early in the opening stanza, the Ephs went on a 20-1 run, capped by a three-pointer from Jackson Rein, for a 25-7 lead with 7:17 remaining.
- Middlebury tallied eight unanswered points to end the frame, cutting the deficit to 10 points (33-23) at the break. Maxwell Alberts sparked the run with a shot from beyond the arc.
- The Panthers started the second half with a 7-3 spurt, slicing the Williams lead to 36-30 on a three-pointer from Sam Stevens at the 16:58 mark.
- Trailing by 10 points (56-46) with 8:17 left, Middlebury battled back with a commanding 20-3 run. Edward Witherington capped the span by sinking a pair of charity tosses with 3:39 remaining to give the Panthers a 66-59 lead.
- The Ephs responded with the next eight points over the ensuing 2:14 of action, moving in front 67-66 on a free throw from Justin Belcher.
- David Brennan converted a layup with exactly one minute to go, but a three-pointer from Alex Lee with six ticks left on the clock gave Williams a 70-68 edge.
- Joseph sank his shot from beyond the arc as time expired to lift Middlebury past the Ephs 71-70.
NOTES
- Brennan nearly posted a double-double with 10 boards and nine points, while snagging three steals. The Panther now has 900 career rebounds.
- The programs met for the 117th time, with the sides trading each of the last 11 contests.
Middlebury is idle until next Saturday when it hosts Bates for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off.
