The Middlebury men's basketball team trailed Bates 75-74 with 3:45 left in Saturday's overtime, but the Panthers manufactured a 11-2 run to cruise to a 92-84 victory over the Bobcats. During the triumph,
Tristan Joseph posted a career-high 37 points, including six in the extra five-minute period.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Bates jumped out to a quick 5-0 edge on a three-point field goal by Babacar Pouye and two free throws by Elliott Cravitz.
- Middlebury answered with a 9-0 burst highlighted by six points from David Brennan for a 9-5 edge with 15:24 left.
- The sides exchanged small leads over the next 12 minutes before a shot from beyond the arc by Maxwell Alberts gave the Panthers a 31-25 advantage with 2:57 showing on the clock.
- The Bobcats answered with a 7-0 spurt, grabbing a one-point edge on a David Omasombo turnaround jumper.
- On the ensuing possession, Joseph converted an old-fashioned three-point play before a layup from Chiwer Mayen tied the contest at 34-34 headed to the break.
- Bates came firing out of the locker room, securing a 45-38 lead on a three from Cole Decker with 2:47 expired.
- After small runs by each team, the Bobcats tallied their largest lead (53-45) on a basket from Ben Leach at 11:48.
- Middlebury rattled off a 16-2 run covering 4:25 of play, securing a 61-55 edge following a long-distance make from Kuba Cwalina.
- Bates whittled away at the deficit over the remainder of the second stanza as a layup from Brady Coyne tied the game at 70-70 with 58 seconds left.
- Joseph converted a driving layup on Middlebury's next possession, while Decker sent the game to overtime with a bucket to knot the contest at 72-72.
- Trailing by one (75-74), the Panthers tallied 11 of the ensuing 13 points with six coming from Joseph to take an 85-77 edge with 58 ticks remaining.
- The Bobcats made it a four-point contest on two occasions, but free throws in the final seconds from Sam Stevens and Evan Flaks clinched the 92-84 triumph.
NOTES
- Brennan secured a game-high 16 rebounds, moving into second place in the program's career laurels with 916 boards. The effort also marked Brennan's 10th double-digit rebounding output this winter.
- Joseph posted a career-best 37 points on 13-of-26 shooting with five threes. The 37-point showing is the most points in a contest since January 3, 2012 when Ryan Sharry recorded 41.
- The programs met for the 56th time with the Panthers holding a 44-12 lead in the all-time series. Middlebury has won the previous four matchups and nine of the last 10.
The Panthers continue their busy stretch with a 6:00 p.m. game on Tuesday at Vermont State University Johnson.
