The Middlebury women's basketball team had three players tally double figures and shot a season-best 51.7 percent from the field during an 82-66 victory Saturday over Wesleyan from Pepin Gymnasium.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Tied at 12-12 with 5:51 left in the opening quarter, Middlebury scored five of the next six points sparked by a Calie Messina three-point field goal to build a 17-13 lead at the 3:24 mark.
- Felicia Fongemie cut the deficit to a possession with a layup before Alexa Mustafaj nailed a three-pointer from the top of the arc with one second remaining for a 20-15 lead.
- The Cardinals stayed close with the Panthers to begin the second quarter as Kaylin Genda tallied two free throws for a 22-20 contest with 8:46 left
- Middlebury answered ripping off a 13-0 run covering the next 4:10 of action, headlined by six points from Mustafaj to build a 35-22 cushion to force a Wesleyan timeout.
- The Panthers continued their double-digit lead as the clock ran down, heading into the locker room ahead by 12 (45-33).
- Wesleyan found momentum to begin the third frame, outsourcing the home team 16-11 to cut the deficit to seven (56-49) with just over three minutes remaining. Meghan Kirck had eight of the 16 points for the visitors over that span.
- Middlebury found a groove to end the third. A layup by Catherine Carrafiello swelled into seven-consecutive points to put the home team ahead 65-49 heading into the fourth.
- Wesleyan could not get any closer than 14 points in the final frame as the Panthers cruised to the 82-66 victory.
NOTES
- Mustafaj led all scorers with 22 points on 7-of-14 shooting.
- Messina put together a strong outing, tallying a season-best 20 points and sinking six three-pointers. She also grabbed six rebounds and dished out a team-high six assists.
- Augusta Dixon finished with 15 points and nine rebounds while adding a blocked shot, the 100th of her career.
- The Panthers rattled home 11 threes, their most since December 3, 2019.
- Middlebury extended its winning streak over the Cardinals to four straight and now holds a 24-14 edge in the all-time series.
The Panthers hit the road for a NESCAC weekend, battling Connecticut College on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Tufts on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
