The fifth-ranked Middlebury men's soccer team scored Saturday's final two goals, pulling away for a 3-1 victory over Hamilton in the NESCAC opener for both teams.
HIGHLIGHTS
- After trading possession in the early stages of the opening half, the Continentals produced three-consecutive corner kicks in the 17th and 18th minutes but the Panther defense stood tall, not surrendering a shot.
- Middlebury nearly got on the scoreboard with 21:26 elapsed, but a shot by Colin Dugan from 12 yards out hit the right post and bounced away.
- Hamilton had its best scoring opportunity at 37:42, as a lofted attempt from Luke O'Dowd near the top of the box was saved by goalie Joey Waterman who came off his line and caught the bid.
- The hosts tallied first with 4:30 left in the initial stanza. Following a Continental foul, Eduardo Casanova lifted the ensuing free kick onto the head of Luke Madden who redirected the ball into the middle of the net for the 1-0 score.
- After the halftime break, Hamilton tied the contest 8:24 into the frame on a nifty passing sequence. Luke Peplowski found space in the middle of the field before connecting with Luke Ehrenfreund. The Continental found a surging Jude Rouhana who blasted his shot off a Panther foot that hit the crossbar and spun into the left panel.
- Middlebury regained the advantage 1:15 later when Gavin Randolph tapped in a loose ball in the six-yard box on crisp assists from Kyle Nilsson and Will Sawin.
- The visitors looked to draw even three minutes later, but a knuckling shot from Rouhana was saved by Waterman moving to his right.
- The score remained that way until 69:39 when Dugan stepped to the dot and converted a penalty kick into the lower-left portion of the goal after a Continental foul.
- The Panthers nearly tacked on a fourth tally with 3:09 remaining, but Hamilton goalie Peter Montesanao Scheibe made a diving save to his right on an attempt from Keagan Harder for a 3-1 final score.
NOTES
- The goals by Madden and Randolph were each their second of the season, while Dugan's penalty-kick tally was his first this fall.
- The programs played for the 19th time in an all-time series that the Panthers hold a 15-3-1 advantage. Middlebury has claimed a victory in seven of the last eight contests.
Following a busy opening week with three matches in five days, the Panthers have a week off before returning to action on Saturday, September 14 with a home match against Trinity.
