The #1 Middlebury women's lacrosse team scored five goals in the initial 6:35 of play, breezing past Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) 19-1 on Peter Kohn Field. The game was originally scheduled to be played on Thursday but was moved due to forecasted inclement weather.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Panthers quickly got on the scoreboard with a pair of goals by Hope Shue just 23 seconds apart. Shue drove from the left side and found the top-right corner with 1:14 elapsed, while Maggie Coughlin found a cutting Shue on a pass from behind the net.
- Shue completed her hat trick with 11:47 showing on the clock on a free-position attempt. Caroline Adams increased the advantage to 4-0 less than a minute later, racing by her defender before bouncing a bid into the bottom-left corner.
- The Engineers recorded their lone goal with 8:10 elapsed in the stanza. Ella Graff worked from right to left across the crease, firing a shot across her body into the top-right corner to make it a 5-1 contest.
- Middlebury answered by tallying the final three goals of the frame, including free-position markers from Adams and Shue, for an 8-1 edge after the opening quarter.
- The Panthers outscored RPI 4-0 in the second stanza, highlighted by free-position strikes from Susan Rowley and Sara Ellinghaus, to take a 12-1 lead into halftime.
- Kate Motley made it a 13-1 score just 56 seconds into the third quarter on a free-position bouncer from the right side. Anna Spehr increased the edge to 14-1 on a quick-stick shot, while Adams recorded her fourth goal of the game to give the hosts a 15-1 lead with one stanza to play.
- Goals from Spehr, Jamee Numan on a bouncing attempt, Motley on a free-position bid and Charlotte Price while a player-up in the fourth quarter provided the final 19-1 score.
NOTES
- Adams finished with a strong all-around game. She collected a season-high 11 draw controls while scoring four goals and adding an assist. The Panther has 77 draws this year, tied for sixth in a season, while her 161 for her career is seventh.
- Shue posted five goals in the victory, moving her up in a pair of program career record books. She ascends to seventh place in goals with 174, while her point total of 212 ranks 10th.
- Gina Driscoll improved to 10-0 in front of the Panther goal, playing the first half before Elizabeth Savage logged the final 30 minutes.
- Kylie Wilson also scooped up a game-best five ground balls and caused two turnovers.
- Middlebury was a perfect 19-19 on clear attempts and 9-9 at the free-position arc.
- The programs played for the eighth time and the first since 2017 with the Panthers winning all eight contests.
Middlebury concludes its busy week that features three games in five days on Saturday when it hosts #9 Colby at 11:00 a.m.
