#1 Women’s Lacrosse Caps Undefeated Regular Season With 12-8 Win Over #16 Williams

The #1 Middlebury women's lacrosse team capped the regular season with a hard-fought 12-8 road victory over #16 Williams. With the win, the Panthers completed the regular season with an unblemished 15-0 overall record.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Ephs took the lead straight off the opening draw control. Claudia Russell received a pass and raced upfield, bouncing her shot past Middlebury goalie Elizabeth Savage for the 1-0 lead.
  • The Panthers evened the contest with less than five minutes elapsed. Hope Shue cut past two Williams' defenders and rifled a shot into the top corner to make it 1-1.
  • Middlebury took a 2-1 edge on a free-position tally by Susan Rowley at the 6:43 mark.
  • Niki Mormile gave the Panthers a 3-1 lead with 2:22 to go, firing her shot into the top-right portion of the net following a nifty assist by Rowley. The hosts responded immediately, making it 3-2 just 29 seconds later on a close-range marker by Anna Miller.
  • With 40 seconds left in the first quarter, Sara Ellinghaus found a cutting Kate Motley who flipped her shot into the left corner to restore the visitors' two goal advantage (4-2).
  • The Ephs would not go away, pulling back within one with 11 seconds left as Cece Tauber spun away from a group of defenders and ripped her attempt into the top-right corner to bring the score to 4-3 to close the opening stanza.
  • Williams kept its foot on the gas to start the second frame as Sasha Landau knotted the score at 4-4 with 5:43 elapsed. 
  • A pair of free-position goals by Shue and Rowley gave Middlebury a 6-4 lead, before Russell's second goal of the contest cut it to 6-5 with 5:48 left in the half.
  • With 3:53 remaining, Motley scored a superb goal, cutting inside and ripping a shot across her body and into the bottom-left corner to make it 7-5 at the halftime break.
  • The Panthers increased their edge to three (8-5) as Shue completed her hat trick via a free-position marker with 2:22 gone by.
  • The Ephs stayed within striking distance, rattling off two unanswered goals over the remainder of the stanza to make it 8-7 with one quarter of action left.
  • Middlebury tallied two goals from Rowley and Maggie Coughlin during the first five minutes of the final frame to storm back into a three-goal advantage (10-7).
  • The visitors continued to pull away, as Shue and Motley each found the back of the net to take a 12-7 lead.
  • Miller cut the deficit to four (12-8), scoring with 3:18 to go, but it was not enough as the Panthers secured the road triumph.
NOTES
  • With four goals in the win, Shue moves into third place in the Middlebury career record books, with 191 career markers.
  • Savage made her first collegiate start in between the pipes, stopping five shots.
  • The Panthers have now won 43-straight games dating back to the 2022 season.
  • This is the third-consecutive season that Middlebury has secured an undefeated regular season record.
  • The programs played for the 56th time with the Panthers holding a 39-17 advantage in the all-time series. Middlebury has won the last 10 meetings and 25 of the last 26 dating back to 2001.
The Panthers return to Peter Kohn Field on Saturday to host #13 Amherst in NESCAC Quarterfinal action at noon.
