The #1/top-seeded Middlebury women's lacrosse team rolled by #13/eighth-seeded Amherst 21-4 in NESCAC Quarterfinal action on Peter Kohn Field. With the win, the Panthers will host the remainder of the tournament on Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Mammoths jumped on the scoreboard with 1:36 expired when Clara Sosa drove through the circle and slotted her shot into the lower left corner for the 1-0 edge.
- Middlebury responded with a free-position marker from Hope Shue, followed by a dodge-and-weave tally by Susan Rowley for the 2-1 lead.
- Amherst knotted the contest with just under 10 minutes remaining in the opening quarter as Sofia Guttman deposited her shot into the upper left corner to make it 2-2.
- The Panthers answered with four-consecutive tallies to close out the frame with a 6-2 advantage. Kate Motley, Rowley, Anna Spehr and Shue each scored once during the span.
- Middlebury continued its momentum into the second quarter, shutting out the Mammoths7-0. Shue got things going with a free-position marker, Skylar Lach forced running time, and Sara Ellinghaus capped the scoring frenzy with a quick-stick tally to make it 13-2 at the halftime break.
- The teams traded goals to start the third quarter, before Motley struck twice to increase the Panther advantage to 16-3 with one frame to go.
- Lach completed her hat trick, scoring back-to-back goals to open the final stanza, before Rowley made it 19-3 on a dish from Charlotte Price.
- Jamee Numan closed out the scoring for Middlebury with a pair of markers, while Amherst's Mia Raven had the final tally of the contest to bring the score to 21-4.
NOTES
- The triumph was the Panther's 44th-straight win and 23rd-consecutive victory at home.
- With nine points today (4G, 5A), Shue moves into fifth place in Middlebury's record books with 243 career points. The Panther also collected a season-best six draw controls during the win.
- Motley tallied career-highs in points (seven) and goals (six) while Lucy Bishop won the most draws in her rookie campaign (six).
- Middlebury and Amherst played for the 60th time as the Panthers improved to 53-7 in the series.
Middlebury continues its pursuit of the program's 12th NESCAC Championship on Saturday, hosting #10/fourth-seeded Colby at 12:00 p.m. in the semifinal round. Second-seeded/#3 Wesleyan and third-seeded/#2 Tufts play for a spot in the title game at 3:00 p.m.
