Softball Takes One of Two From Trinity

The Middlebury softball team fell by a tightly-contest 2-1 scoreline in the opening game of Sunday's doubleheader against Trinity, but responded with a resounding 10-0 victory in game two to split the twinbill.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Bantams took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Isabella Calagna came across the plate on a Panther miscue.
  • In the third, Trinity tacked on a second run. Taylor Mikolajczak walked and advanced to third on a base hit by Gianna Tito before coming home on a sacrifice fly by Kennedy Rodgers.
  • Middlebury halved the deficit in the bottom of the fourth. Megan Fox sent the first pitch she saw over the fence in left center to make it 2-1.
  • The Panthers threatened in the final frame, loading the bases. McKenna Lont worked a full count and lashed a line drive that looked destined to find the outfield turf, but Bantam Mikayla O'Brien snagged the would-be base hit to record the final out and give the visitors a 2-1 win.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury jumped in front during the first inning. With runners on second and third, Nina Schroeder came through in the clutch, ripping a single up the middle to plate two teammates and bring the score to 2-0.
  • The Panthers added another run in the third. Kristyn Carroll led off by reaching second on a Bantam miscue and swiped third before scoring on a base hit by Cate Viola to make it 3-0.
  • Middlebury pulled away in the fourth. Olivia Scholes sent a single up the middle, and Jennifer Westphal launched a double to left to put runners on second and third. Cece Ziegler followed with a single to right to drive in two runs. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Fox looped a two-RBI single into left and Viola delivered a run-scoring single to make it 8-0.
  • The hosts tacked on two more tallies on a bases loaded walk and a sacrifice fly to extend their lead to 10-0 before recording the final three outs in the fifth to earn the win.
NOTES
  • Carroll swiped three bases during the second game of the doubleheader, giving her 20 stolen bases this spring. The total is a program single-season record.
  • Fox's home run in the first game was the 11th of her career, tying her for fourth all-time in the Panther record books.
  • In the victory, Lont pitched a complete game, allowing no runs while striking out four hitters.
  • The programs faced off for the seventh and eighth times with Trinity holding a 5-3 edge.
Middlebury is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Skidmore for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
