Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

#1 Panthers Claim Back-And-Forth 15-10 Battle Over #20 Bantams On Senior Day

The top-ranked Middlebury women's lacrosse team was tested by #20 Trinity, but the Panthers were able to hold off the Bantams for a 15-10 victory on Senior Day. Prior to the start of the game, Middlebury honored seniors Sara Ellinghaus, Susan Rowley, Charlotte Price, Abby Hillebrecht, Chloe Newman, Niki Mormile and Kate Burke.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers opened the scoring at the 12:40 mark when Caroline Adams found Maggie Coughlin for a quick-stick tally.
  • Trinity answered with 9:26 left on the clock. After an initial free-position attempt sailed wide, Caroline Lampert dished a pass from the right edge of the circle that Natalie Miller used a sidearm shot to bury, making it 1-1.
  • Middlebury responded with back-to-back tallies coming from Kelcey Dion while a player up, followed by Skylar Lach for the 3-1 advantage with just under eight minutes remaining.
  • Miller and Adams traded goals for the teams, before the Bantams tallied two-straight markers to knot the contest at 4-4. The third Trinity goal came from Molly McGuckin as she fell to the ground, before Lampert slipped the equalizer inside the left pipe.
  • With 49 ticks left on the first quarter clock, Hope Shue and Rowley found nylon to give the Panthers a 6-4 edge.
  • The second stanza was a back-and-forth affair, with Middlebury tallying the initial two goals, and Trinity scoring twice to bring the Panther advantage to 8-6 at the halftime break.
  • Out of the intermission, Casey Ward sprinted down the field on a clearing attempt after a Middlebury turnover, drove through the circle and buried the ball into the upper right corner to cut the deficit to one (8-7) at the 11:59 mark.
  • Just over a minute later, the Panthers responded as Adams found Shue through traffic to increase the edge back to a pair (9-7).
  • With 2:30 to go in the frame, McGuckin picked up a groundball and fired a shot into the net, but as the ball left her stick the whistle blew for a foul and the goal was called off.
  • Middlebury extended its advantage to 10-7 with just over a minute left in the third quarter when Anna Spehr scored while on the player advantage.
  • With 25 seconds expired in the final frame, Trinity's Lampert bounced a free-position inside the left pipe while a player up to slice the lead to 10-8.
  • The Panthers responded with a 4-1 burst, capped by a beautiful dodge-and-weave by Ellinghaus at the 7:04 mark to make it 14-9.
  • A quick stick marker from Bantam Sarah Marvin with less than five minutes to go cut the deficit down to four (14-10), but it wasn't enough, as Shue secured the 15-10 win with a goal at the 1:46 mark.
NOTES
  • The triumph was the 42nd in a row for Middlebury, and the program's 22nd-straight victory on Peter Kohn Field.
  • Elizabeth Savage earned her first career win in goal for the Panthers, making seven stops over 45 minutes of action.
Middlebury wraps up the regular season on Wednesday with a 6:00 p.m. contest at #16 Williams.
