Superb Pitching & Fox’s Big Day Propels Softball To Sweep Of Williams

The Middlebury softball team utilized superb pitching and timely hitting to earn 4-3 and 6-3 triumphs at Williams on Saturday afternoon.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers jumped ahead in the opening frame. Kristyn Carroll began the contest with a walk, before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt and stealing third. A groundout by Megan Fox brought Carroll home to give the visitors a 1-0 edge.
  • The Ephs knotted the score at 1-1 in the third. With two outs, Tayler Wise reached first on a bunt single and came around to score on a double to right by Ronni Ramos.
  • In the fifth, Carroll led off with a walk and swiped second base. McKenna Lont was next up, and ripped a double to the center field fence to plate Carroll and give Middlebury a2-1 edge.
  • Williams answered in the following frame. Vicky Balderas singled and Alysa DeQuiroz doubled to put runners on second and third. Kayla Chang followed with a base hit which scored Balderas to even the contest at 2-2.
  • With two outs in the sixth, Jennifer Westphal kept the inning alive with a base hit through the left side. Cece Ziegler singled to right and an errant throw allowed Westphal to scamper home, giving the Panthers a 3-2 lead.
  • The hosts would not go away, tying the game for the third time in the bottom of the sixth. With the bases loaded, Katie Blanch knocked a sacrifice fly to left field to bring Kelly McGuigan across the plate to make it 3-3.
  • Middlebury would not be denied the victory in game one. In the top of the seventh, Skylar Wong led off with a single up the middle and moved to second on a fielder's choice. Wong continued to make her way around the bases on back-to-back passed balls, sliding into home to secure the 4-3 triumph.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers wasted no time taking the lead in the nightcap, as a sacrifice fly by Fox plated Carroll for the 1-0 edge.
  • Middlebury tacked on another run in the second. Kelley Dever led off with a double down the left field line and came around to score on a single to right by Olivia Scholes to make it 2-1.
  • The Ephs halved the deficit in the fourth (2-1) as Blanch crossed home plate on a Panther miscue.
  • Middlebury answered with a run in the fifth as Fox launched the ball over the center field wall to extend the lead to 3-1.
  • The visitors pulled away in the top of the seventh. Carroll bunted for a single and stole second and third before coming home to score on a wild pitch. Later in the inning with runners on second and third, Nina Schroeder singled to left to drive in two more runs and increase the advantage to 6-2.
  • Williams sliced the lead to three (6-3) on a run-scoring single by DeQuiroz, but it was not enough, as the Panthers held on for the 6-3 win and the Saturday sweep.
