The top-ranked Middlebury women's lacrosse team scored six unanswered goals in the opening quarter, en route to a 19-3 victory at St. Lawrence.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Panthers wasted little time, getting on the board with just 46 seconds elapsed when Anna Spehr launched the ball over the left shoulder of Saints goalie Courtney Lynn for the 1-0 edge.
- Middlebury doubled its lead (2-0) when Hope Shue tallied a free-position marker while a player up at the 12:23 mark.
- The Panthers increased their advantage to 6-0 with goals from Caroline Messer, Skylar Lach, and back-to-back tallies from Susan Rowley to close out the opening quarter.
- With 36 ticks off the second stanza clock, Shue made it 7-0, but the hosts spoiled the scoring spree with a tally at the 12:58 mark. Morgan Arakelian sent a pass from behind the goal to Liz Evans who used a quick stick to evade Middlebury goalie Gina Driscoll to make it 7-1.
- The visitors had five different scorers over the rest of the frame, including a pair of extra player tallies to take a 12-1 advantage at the intermission.
- Out of the break, Britt Nawrocki scored her first goal of the season, followed by a tally from Rowley for the 14-1 lead.
- St. Lawrence cut the deficit to 14-3 with back-to-back quick stick goals by Evans and Neve Ley.
- Burdine Atherton assisted on a goal with six seconds left in the third quarter, and converted a free-position attempt at the 11:51 of the fourth for a 16-3 advantage.
- Maddie Ocampo tallied her first and second goals of the season, running the Panthers' lead to 18-3.
- Kate Motley capped the scoring for Middlebury with 3:18 to go, securing the 19-3 triumph.
NOTES
- With three goals in today's win, Shue moves into a tie for eighth place on the program career list with 169 total.
- Caroline Adams tallied her 150th draw control during the victory with eight total, while Lucy Bishop recorded a career-high five.
- The Panthers and the Saints played for the 19th time with Middlebury improving to 13-6 in the all-time series.
Due to impending weather, the Panthers are right back in action on Wednesday, hosting Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
