Middlebury Downed In Doubleheader Action At #16 Tufts

The Middlebury softball team fell in NESCAC doubleheader action on Sunday at #16 Tufts. The Jumbos claimed game one by a tight 3-1 score in a pitcher's duel and were victorious 16-3 in a five-inning nightcap.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers jumped out to an early lead in the second inning. Cece Ziegler launched her first home run of the season over the left-field fence for a 1-0 edge.
  • The Jumbos leveled the contest in the third. Bela Jiminez reached on a fielder's choice and raced around to score on a double to left by Rachel Moore.
  • Tufts took the lead in the fifth when Michelle Adelman produced an RBI groundout to shortstop, driving in pinch runner Sarah Cullen from third base for a 2-1 advantage.
  • The hosts added a run in the sixth when Lauryn Horita homered to left, securing the 3-1 triumph.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Much like the first contest, Middlebury grabbed an early advantage. McKenna Lont reached on a fielder's choice with one out in the initial frame and moved to second on a groundout, before racing around to score on a base hit to left field from Cate Viola.
  • The Jumbos responded with three runs in their first at-bat and tacked on four more in the second for a 7-1 lead.
  • The Panthers sliced the deficit to four (7-3) in the third when Nina Schroeder ripped a two-run single up the middle to push Kristyn Carroll across the plate.
  • Tufts plated nine runs on 10 hits in its next at-bat for the final 16-3 tally in five innings.
NOTES
  • Viola went a combined 3-for-5 with a double, a run batted in and scored once, while Carroll was 3-for-7 with a run scored.
  • The programs played for the 21st and 22nd times.
Following a busy stretch with six games in five days, Middlebury returns to action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Williams. The first pitch of the twinbill is slated for 1:00 p.m.
