Softball Splits Twinbill With Colby

The Middlebury softball team split its NESCAC doubleheader with Colby on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers fell 2-1 in a tightly-contested game one before bouncing back for a 7-6 win in the nightcap.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • The opening contest was a pitcher's duel, with both teams combining for no runs and just three hits through five innings.
  • The Panthers broke through in the top of the sixth. Cate Viola led off with a single and advanced to second on a fielder's choice. Olivia Scholes drove her teammate home with a base hit to second to give the visitors a 1-0 edge.
  • In the seventh, Mule Courtney Schumacher opened the inning with a double to right center and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, before crossing the plate on a sac fly by Juliana Kiley to make it 1-1.
  • Colby walked it off in the bottom of the eighth. Ayston Asadoorian drew a base on balls and stole second before scampering to third on a base hit by Carissa Cassidy. Two batters later, Chloe Wilcox drove a single to left field to plate Asadoorian and give the hosts a 2-1 win in extra innings.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, tallying three runs in the top of the first. Kristyn Carroll led off by working a walk and swiping second. McKenna Lont followed with a double to left center to make it 1-0. Later in the inning, with runners on second and third, Nina Schroeder roped a single to right center which scored two runs to extend the lead to 3-0.
  • The Mules responded with three tallies in the bottom of the frame. With runners on the corners, the hosts executed a double steal which allowed Cassidy to slide in safely at home. Schumacher was up next, launching a two-run homer to right center to level the contest at 3-3.
  • Colby took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third. Schumacher singled through the left side and stole second before Victoria Ramirez drove her in with a run-scoring double to left.
  • The Panthers answered with a three-spot in the next frame. With runners on first and second, Lont drove a single up the middle, which plated Cece Ziegler who had doubled, to tie the game (4-4). Megan Fox was next up, clearing the bases with a two-RBI single to left center to give Middlebury the 6-4 edge.
  • The Panthers continued to extend their advantage in the fifth. With two outs, Ziegler singled to center and came around to score on a double down the left-field line by Carroll to make it 7-4.
  • Colby pulled to within one (7-6) on a two-out, two-run roundtripper by Schumacher in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough as Middlebury induced a groundout to shortstop to hang on for the 7-6 road win.
NOTES
  • Jewel Ashbrook was superb in the circle during game one. The pitcher went seven innings, striking out five batters and allowing just five hits. In the second contest, Lont fanned seven hitters and earned her seventh win of the season.
  • Carroll tallied a team-high four hits throughout the day, while Lont, Fox and Schroeder each drove in two runs.
  • The programs squared off for the 23rd and 24th times, with the Mules holding a 14-10 edge in the series.
Middlebury travels to Massachusetts on Sunday to take on #16 Tufts in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
