Softball Drops Pair of Contests To Bates

The Middlebury softball team dropped a pair of NESCAC contests to Bates in midweek action. The Bobcats earned a 9-4 come-from-behind win in the opening game before triumphing 9-2 in the nightcap.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Kristyn Carroll kicked things off in the first for the hosts, taking the second pitch that she saw over the right-field fence for a solo home run to give the Panthers a 1-0 edge. Later in the inning with runners on first and second, Olivia Scholes continued the scoring, launching a three-run homer over the wall in left-center to make it 4-0.
  • Bates cut the deficit to two in the third (4-2). Zariya Anderson got things going with a single through the left side before coming around to score on a double by Elizabeth Pellini. Sienna Pietrasiewicz followed with a base hit to center which allowed Pellini to cross home plate.
  • The Bobcats pulled to within one in the fifth. With the bases loaded, Rachel Liazos legged out an infield single to third base which scored Anderson to bring the score to 4-3.
  • In the following frame, the visitors evened the contest at four apiece as a groundout by Anderson plated Sarah Cook.
  • Bates tallied five runs in the seventh to move into the lead. Highlighting the rally was a two-run double by Liazos as well as a run-scoring single from Emma Yen to secure the 9-4 victory.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Bobcats got things going in the opening frame, scoring four runs. With runners on each base, Anderson touched home plate on a groundout by Pietrasiewicz, before a triple down the right-field line by Liazos cleared the bases. Two batters later, Grace Householter brought Liazos across the plate with a double to give the visitors a 4-0 advantage.
  • Bates added two runs in the fifth on a double to right center by Liazos and a single by Yen to make it 6-0.
  • In the top of the seventh, the visitors tacked on three more tallies to give them the 9-0 lead.
  • Middlebury managed to bring two runs home in the final frame. Cece Ziegler opened the inning with a walk before Carroll drove her in with a double over the head of the left fielder. During the next at-bat, Carroll scampered home on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to seven, but the Bobcats hung on for the 9-2 win.
NOTES
  • The programs played for the 18th and 19th times with Bates holding a 10-9 edge in the all-time series.
The Panthers will head to Maine on Saturday to face Colby in a conference doubleheader with the first pitch scheduled for noon.
