Late Rally Lifts Top-Ranked Women’s Lacrosse Over #8 Wesleyan 12-10

Trailing 10-9 with under five minutes to go, the top-ranked Middlebury women's lacrosse team tallied three unanswered goals, including two by Hope Shue, to slip past #8 Wesleyan 12-10 on Saturday afternoon.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Cardinals opened the scoring with 3:22 elapsed. Laura Baine received a pass from Bridget Horst and tucked her shot home from close range for the 1-0 lead. 
  • The Panthers answered just over one minute later as Shue found the back of the net with a free-position goal.
  • Brooke Nelson restored Wesleyan's lead at the 8:49 mark, but Shue responded, weaving through defenders and finding the top corner with 5:04 remaining to make it 2-2.
  • The teams traded goals over the next 4:35 to bring the score to 3-3. With just six seconds left in the opening frame, Caroline Adams gave the Panthers a 4-3 edge as she cut across the crease and fired a bid over the shoulder of Cardinal goalie Izzy Weintraub and into the net.
  • Middlebury opened the second quarter on the front foot. Kelcey Dion zipped a pass to Anna Spehr who found the nylon to extend the advantage to two (5-3).
  • Wesleyan answered at the 7:58 mark as Baine ripped a free-position marker into the top right corner, but Shue tallied a fast-break goal with 6:03 to go in the second stanza to give the Panthers a 6-4 edge heading into the halftime break.
  • Wesleyan opened the second half strong, scoring two unanswered markers over the first 3:24 to level the contest at 6-6. 
  • Maggie Coughlin and Spehr each tallied a goal to push the Middlebury lead back to two (8-6) with 7:02 left, but the Cardinals would not go away, closing the third quarter with tallies by Olivia Lai and Dylan Green to even the score at 8-8 with one frame to play.
  • With 3:14 elapsed in the fourth stanza, Susan Rowley snatched a ground ball following a turnover and raced up field before rifling a bid into the top-left corner to give the Panthers a 9-8 edge.
  • Wesleyan stormed into a 10-9 advantage with a player-up goal and a free-position tally over the next 2:02.
  • With 4:32 remaining in the contest, Shue drew a foul and converted on the subsequent free-position attempt to knot the score at 10 apiece. Just 1:31 later, the attacker gave the hosts the 11-10 lead, before Rowley secured the victory, receiving a pass from Shue and ripping a shot into the upper corner for the 12-10 final score.
NOTES
  • Middlebury has won 36-consecutive contests and 18-straight games on Peter Kohn Field. During that span, the Panthers have scored double-figure goals in every contest.
  • With seven points (5G, 2A) today, Shue eclipsed the 200-point mark, totaling 204 for her career.
  • Adams won six draw controls during today's contest. She has won at least five draws in each of the last nine games, dating back to the NCAA Championship game last season.
  • The programs played for the 24th time with Middlebury winning all 24 contests.
The Panthers are back in action on Tuesday when they host St. Lawrence at 5:30 p.m.
