Softball Secures Sweep Of St. Lawrence & William Paterson At THE Spring Games

The Middlebury softball team earned a pair of victories at THE Spring Games on Wednesday afternoon. The Panthers rallied past St. Lawrence 3-1 in their opening game before defeating William Paterson 6-1 later in the afternoon.

HIGHLIGHTS VS. ST. LAWRENCE
  • The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when the Saints tallied a single run. With the bases loaded, Middlebury nearly got out of a jam, recording back-to-back outs by throwing runners out at the plate, but a single to right field by Izzy Melanson scored Olivia Caporale to make it 1-0.
  • The Panthers responded immediately in the top of the seventh. Kristyn Carroll and Cate Viola began the rally with two-straight singles to put runners on first and second. McKenna Lont evened the contest at 1-1 with a base hit to right center which plated Carroll before Megan Fox gave Middlebury the lead with a single which scored Viola. The Panthers kept the run going as Lont came around to score on a base hit by Sarah LaFond to extend the advantage to a pair (3-1).
  • From there, Lont shut down the Saints, recording the final three outs in the circle to give Middlebury a come-from-behind 3-1 win.
HIGHLIGHTS VS. WILLIAM PATERSON
  • William Paterson got on the board first, tallying its lone run on an RBI single to right field by Grace Gaskill.
  • The Panthers answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame. Carroll led off with a single to center and stole second before advancing to third on a passed ball. An errant throw by the Pioneers' catcher brought Carroll across the plate to knot the score at one apiece.
  • Middlebury blew the game open in the fifth, scoring five runs. With a runner on second, Jewel Ashbrook launched a double to left to give the Panthers a 2-1 edge. Skylar Wong followed with an infield hit to shortstop that plated Ashbrook, making it 3-1. Carroll was next up, singling to left before Viola hit a ground ball to second. William Paterson looked to turn the double-play but a throwing error allowed Wong to come around to score to increase the advantage to three (4-1).
  • Later in the inning with runners on first and second, Fox blasted a double to left that cleared the bases and extended the Middlebury lead to 6-1.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Ashbrook recorded the final three outs in the circle to secure the 6-1 win for the Panthers.
NOTES
  • Lont continues her stellar pitching this season. The Panther picked up her third win in today's opener, throwing six innings of scoreless ball while striking out four batters.
  • Fox tallied three RBI during today's games which gives her seven on the season.
  • Carroll went 5-for-8 at the plate throughout the two contests and currently leads the squad with a .577 batting average.
  • Wong recorded her first collegiate RBI during the victory over the Pioneers.
Middlebury is back in action on Thursday when it faces Kalamazoo at 11:30 a.m. and Southern Virginia at 1:45 p.m.
