Softball Takes One Of Two On Day Five of THE Spring Games

The Middlebury softball team fell to Kalamazoo 11-8 during this morning's action, but bounced back with a resounding 15-6 victory over Southern Virginia to conclude the fifth day of THE Spring Games.

HIGHLIGHTS VS. KALAMAZOO
  • The Hornets began the contest with five runs over the opening two innings. Bella Caza highlighted the spurt with two singles and two runs batted in.
  • In the fourth, Kalamazoo extended its advantage with the bases loaded. Caza continued her strong day, bringing all three runners home with a single to center field to make it 8-0. The Hornets tacked on two more runs on a wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt to increase the lead to 10-0.
  • The Panthers responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Kelley Dever drove home two runs with an RBI double to left center. Jewel Ashbrook followed with a single down the right-field line to plate Sarah LaFond and Jennifer Westphal followed by scoring Dever with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to six (10-4).
  • Kalamazoo added another run in the top of the seventh. Lizzy Rottenberk singled and eventually came around to score on a two-bagger by Jordan Wesaw.
  • The Panthers nearly pulled off the comeback in the bottom of the seventh. Nina Schroeder and Olivia Scholes began the inning with back-to-back base hits. Kristyn Carroll and Cate Viola kept the rally going with singles of their own to bring in both runners and make it 11-6.
  • Later in the frame with runners on first and second, LaFond blasted a double to left field, scoring Carroll and Viola to pull within three (11-8), but the Hornets held on for the win.
HIGHLIGHTS VS. SOUTHERN VIRGINIA
  • Middlebury jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first. With runners on second and third, a Knights' miscue allowed one run to cross the plate before LaFond reached on a fielder's choice to score Viola.
  • Southern Virginia answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning on a pair of Panther miscues and a fielder's choice to take a 3-2 edge.
  • Middlebury knotted the score at 3-3 in the second. McKenna Lont ripped a single up the middle which brought Skylar Wong in to score.
  • The Knights responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame. With runners on second and third, Kymbal Jones drove a base hit to right center which cleared the bases, bringing the score to 5-3.
  • The Panthers would not go away, taking a 6-5 lead in the third. LaFond reached on a Southern Virginia error and Dever followed with a single. Westphal roped a base hit through the right side to plate LaFond and make it 5-4. Later in the inning with runners at each base, Carroll singled to bring Westphal home before Viola knocked a sacrifice fly to left to drive Schroeder across the plate and give Middlebury a 6-5 edge.
  • In the fourth, the Panthers continued to pull away, adding two more runs on a fielder's choice and a Knight miscue to claim an 8-5 lead.
  • Middlebury broke the game open in the fifth scoring four times, highlighted by a run-scoring single from Dever to make it 12-5.
  • Southern Virginia answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth, as a groundout by Mattison Christensen scored Madison Lloyd to make it 12-6. That was as close as the Knights would get, as the Panthers tacked on three more runs over the final two innings, capped by a two-run double by Samantha Hausman in the seventh, to cruise to the 15-6 victory.
