Panthers Fall To Grinnell & Ramapo

The Middlebury softball team fell by a 12-3 score in five innings to Grinnell during Monday's opening contest, before losing to Ramapo 16-1 in five frames during the afternoon game. Both contests were delayed at the start due to weather conditions.

HIGHLIGHTS VS. GRINNELL
  • The Panthers got on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning. Kristyn Carroll reached on a fielder's choice and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the frame, the Pioneers grabbed a 2-1 advantage when Alexa Okada was hit by a pitch and touched the plate on a two-run homer to right-center field by Samantha Chu.
  • Middlebury regained its one-run edge in the top of the fourth. Sarah LaFond reached on an infield hit and Kelley Dever singled to right center, as both Panthers scampered home on a two-base hit into the right-center field gap by Carroll for a 3-2 advantage.
  • Grinnell responded with 10 runs in the home half of the inning, including a two-run double down the left-field line by Chu and a three-run double to center off the bat of Jasmine Oda for the final 12-3 score in five innings.
HIGHLIGHTS VS. RAMAPO
  • Ramapo jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first stanza. Alexis Corra walked and later scored on an RBI single to right from Avery Bartolomeo, while Mahogany Wheeler singled earlier in the inning and touched home on a fielder's choice.
  • Middlebury loaded the bases with one out in the third on base hits from Nina Schroeder, Carroll and Cate Viola, but Roadunner starting pitcher Kassy Stefanski worked her way out of the jam to maintain the two-run edge.
  • Ramapo plated four runs in the fourth and touched home 10 more times in the fifth inning for a 16-0 lead.
  • The Panthers recorded a run in the bottom of the frame. Schroeder led off with a single up the middle and Samantha Hausman was inserted as a pinch runner. Hausman moved to second on a ground out and to third on a base hit to left by Carroll before scoring on an RBI groundout from Viola for the 16-1 final tally.
NOTES
  • Carroll went a combined 3-for-5 at the plate with a double and two RBI.
  • The Panthers squared off with Grinnell for the fourth time with the Pioneers winning three of the meetings.
  • Middlebury and Ramapo played for the first time in softball.
