Softball Goes 1-1 On Day Two Of THE Spring Games

The Middlebury softball team fell 9-4 to Wellesley in Sunday's opening game, but rallied to defeat Carleton 6-3 during the afternoon contest to earn a two-game split.

HIGHLIGHTS VS. WELLESLEY
  • The Blue took the lead in the top of the second. Sarah Wicker singled to shortstop before Anisa Rodriguez doubled to right-center to bring Wicker across the plate and make it 1-0.
  • Wellesley increased its advantage in the following frame. Andrea Delgado singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Jillian Colgan followed, lining a base hit to left to plate Delgado and make it 2-0.
  • In the fifth, the Blue pushed the lead to five. Charis Chung led off with a triple and was driven in on a single by Elli DeCleene to make it 3-0. DeCleene later scored on an RBI groundout before Emeline Gaunce singled to make it 5-0.
  • The Panthers tallied a run in the bottom of the inning. Sarah LaFond singled to plate Marina Lyon and close to within four (5-1).
  • Wellesley restored their five run lead in the top of the sixth, as Lauren Skolaris came around to score on a Middlebury miscue.
  • The Panthers chipped away at the deficit, slicing it to 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth. With the bases loaded, an RBI groundout by McKenna Lont scored Cate Viola. Megan Fox followed with a base hit up the middle to drive in two more runs.
  • That was as close as Middlebury would get as Wellesley responded with three runs in the top of the seventh to pull away for the 9-4 win.
HIGHLIGHTS VS. CARLETON
  • The Knights got things going in the top of the first. With Megan Smith on third base, Bryanna Schaffer singled to left field to open the scoring. Later in the inning, a base hit by Grace Colburn plated Schaffer to make it 2-0.
  • Middlebury knotted the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the third. With runners on second and third, Fox roped a single to left field to score Kristyn Carroll and Viola to even the contest.
  • Carleton regained the lead in the fifth as a sacrifice fly by Schaffer brought Smith across the plate, making it 3-2.
  • The Panthers stormed into a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the inning, tallying four runs. A fielder's choice and a pair of Knights' miscues allowed Middlebury to load the bases. LaFond reached on an error, allowing one run to cross home and level the score at 3-3. Jennifer Westphal lined a single to left field which scored Lont, before Kelley Dever was hit by a pitch to drive in Fox.
  • That was all the insurance that the Panthers would need, as Lont recorded six-straight outs to secure the 6-3 triumph.
NOTES
  • Fox had a strong day at the plate, recording four hits and four RBIs.
  • Lont tallied her second win in the circle in as many starts.
  • Middlebury faced Wellesley for the eighth time overall with the Blue owning a narrow 5-3 edge.
  • The Panthers also played Carleton eighth time with Middlebury owning a 5-3 advantage in the series.
The Panthers are back in action on Monday when they face Grinnell at 11:15 a.m. and Ramapo at 1:45 p.m.
