Softball Opens The Season With Pair of Victories

The Middlebury softball team opened its 2024 campaign with a pair of victories, edging Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) 5-4 before claiming a 7-3 win over Worcester State. The Panthers played both games at the Legends Way Ballfields in Clermont, Florida as a part of THE Spring Games.

HIGHLIGHTS VS. MSOE
  • The Raiders got on the board first, as a single by Jenna Trewyn brought Faith Matta across the plate for the 1-0 lead.
  • Middlebury answered with four runs in the third. Nina Schroeder walked and advanced to second on a single by Jewel Ashbrook, before coming around to score on an MSOE miscue. Kristyn Carroll followed by launching a three-run roundtripper to give the Panthers a 4-1 advantage.
  • Middlebury tacked on a fifth run in the bottom of the fourth when Carroll singled to left field to score Jennifer Westphal and make it 5-1.
  • The Raiders responded with a run in the top of the fifth. Trewyn doubled to right center and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt before crossing home plate on a Panther miscue to cut the deficit to three (5-2).
  • MSOE continued its comeback bid attempt and pulled to within one (5-4) in the sixth. Adeline Kortman and Matta each singled and advanced on a fielder's choice. Trewyn drove both runs in, knocking a base hit into center field.
  • That was as close as the Raiders would get as Ashbrook set them down in order in the seventh inning to secure the 5-4 win for the Panthers.
HIGHLIGHTS VS. WORCESTER STATE
  • In the first, the Lancers loaded the bases with three-straight singles. Bella Gasbarro singled to drive in the game's opening run, before Lauren Dube plated Morgan Keefe with a base hit to make it 2-0.
  • Middlebury rallied to take a 5-2 lead in the top of the fourth. With the bases loaded, Westphal drove a sacrifice fly to center field that brought Skylar Wong across home plate. Sarah LaFond followed with a walk to load the bases and Schroeder and Kelley Dever each drew base-on-balls to send runs across the plate and give the Panthers a 3-2 edge. Later in the inning, with runners at each base, Carroll roped a single to center, scoring Schroder and Dever to increase the lead to three (5-2).
  • Worcester State cut the deficit to 5-3 in the sixth on an RBI single by Emma Lanpher, but the Panthers responded with two more runs in the top of the seventh. Dever blasted a triple into the gap to plate LaFond and Schroeder and secure the 7-3 Middlebury triumph.
NOTES
  • Ashbrook and Lont were sensational in the circle, with both pitchers throwing complete games.
  • Carroll ended the day going 5-8 from the plate and registered six runs batted in across both games.
  • Dever recorded her first career RBIs, plating three with her triple against the Lancers.
The Panthers are back in action on Sunday when they face Wellesley at 11:00 a.m. and Carleton at 1:45 p.m., with both games taking place at Hancock Park.
