The Middlebury women's basketball team battled top-ranked New York University (NYU) before falling 73-49 on Sunday from the Big Apple.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Violets built an early 12-4 advantage capped by a driving layup from Belle Pellecchia with 5:09 remaining in the opening quarter.
- Middlebury started to find some rhythm, as Gabby Stuart and Keeley Baglio converted baskets to make it 19-10 at the 3:19 mark.
- NYU closed the stanza on a 7-3 run with five coming from Mary Kate Fahey for a 27-13 score after 10 minutes.
- Calie Messina got the scoring going for the Panthers with a pull-up jumper from the right elbow to keep the deficit at 14 (29-15) with about a minute and a half expired in the second.
- NYU answered Messina's bucket with five consecutive points for a 19-point cushion (34-15) at the 6:52 mark.
- Augusta Dixon caught fire late in the quarter, scoring seven consecutive points to make the score 36-22 with 1:12 remaining.
- Middlebury's defense clamped down on the NYU offense after the earlier 5-0 run, not allowing a single made field goal for nearly seven minutes, but the Violets held a 37-22 advantage heading into the locker room.
- Kale Tornwini nailed the first bucket 29 ticks into the second half on a putback jumper to push the Panthers within 37-24.
- NYU found its groove after Tornwini's make, as a Natalie Bruns layup swelled into a 13-2 surge to extend the lead to 24 with 3:46 left.
- Middlebury responded with a quick 5-0 burst before Pellechia and Bruns combined for six points over the final 1:12 for a 56-31 score after three.
- The Panthers had their best quarter in points (15) and field goal percentage (45.5) in the fourth, but the Violets' cushion was too large as they earned the 73-49 triumph.
NOTES
- Tornwini tied her career high with 14 points alongside seven rebounds. Baglio was the other Panther in double figures (11).
- Dixon grabbed a team-best eight rebounds and added nine points.
- Middlebury and NYU met for the second time with the other battle coming in 2016
