The Middlebury women's basketball team left it all out on the court on the final day of the year, but it wasn't enough as Springfield defeated the Panthers 67-61 in double overtime. The game occurred on the first day of the Fairfield Inn & Suites Enfield/Naismith Classic with both teams competing again on New Year's Day.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair with neither team able to build a sizable lead. A charity toss from Alexa Mustafaj with 39 seconds remaining gave Middlebury an 11-10 edge.
- The Pride responded in the second stanza, rattling off eight of the next 10 points for an 18-13 advantage with 4:20 left in the half.
- Springfield continued pulling away, posting a 9-2 run to close out the session. Angie Czeremcha highlighted the span with five points for the 27-17 lead at the break.
- August Dixon looked to spark the Panther offense to begin the third quarter, sinking back-to-back jumpers to cut the deficit to six (27-21) at the 8:21 mark.
- The Pride answered with a 9-2 burst capped on a jumper from Carrie Hess for a 37-23 advantage with just over a minute to go in the third.
- Trailing 40-29 with 7:55 showing on the fourth-quarter clock, Middlebury put together a 12-5 spurt capped by a three from Mustafaj to slice the lead down to four (45-41) with 3:35 remaining.
- A shot from beyond the arc by Mustafaj with 43 ticks left closed the gap to 48-45, before a buzzer-beater three from Calie Messina sent the contest to overtime.
- The Pride returned the favor in the initial extra stanza as Claire Finney sank a shot from beyond the arc with six seconds remaining to send the contest to a second overtime session.
- Tied at 60 points apiece at the 2:07 mark, the Pride tallied seven of the final eight points to secure the 67-61 triumph.
NOTES
- Mustafaj paced all players with 31 points while going 5-for-6 at the stripe.
- The contest was the 15th matchup between the programs, with Springfield taking an 8-7 edge in the all-time series.
Middlebury tips off against Ithaca on Wednesday at 12:00 p.m., while the Pride plays NESCAC foe Tufts at 2:30 p.m.
