Women’s Basketball Edged By Springfield In Double Overtime

The Middlebury women's basketball team left it all out on the court on the final day of the year, but it wasn't enough as Springfield defeated the Panthers 67-61 in double overtime. The game occurred on the first day of the Fairfield Inn & Suites Enfield/Naismith Classic with both teams competing again on New Year's Day.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Pride responded in the second stanza, rattling off eight of the next 10 points for an 18-13 advantage with 4:20 left in the half.
  • Springfield continued pulling away, posting a 9-2 run to close out the session. Angie Czeremcha highlighted the span with five points for the 27-17 lead at the break.
  • August Dixon looked to spark the Panther offense to begin the third quarter, sinking back-to-back jumpers to cut the deficit to six (27-21) at the 8:21 mark.
  • The Pride answered with a 9-2 burst capped on a jumper from Carrie Hess for a 37-23 advantage with just over a minute to go in the third.
  • Trailing 40-29 with 7:55 showing on the fourth-quarter clock, Middlebury put together a 12-5 spurt capped by a three from Mustafaj to slice the lead down to four (45-41) with 3:35 remaining.
  • A shot from beyond the arc by Mustafaj with 43 ticks left closed the gap to 48-45, before a buzzer-beater three from Calie Messina sent the contest to overtime.
  • The Pride returned the favor in the initial extra stanza as Claire Finney sank a shot from beyond the arc with six seconds remaining to send the contest to a second overtime session.
  • Tied at 60 points apiece at the 2:07 mark, the Pride tallied seven of the final eight points to secure the 67-61 triumph.
